Automatická telefonní ústředna Building

Automatická telefonní ústředna in Prague 6 in Dejvice was a technical building from 1975-1982. It combined elements of brutalism and high-tech architecture. The building in the street of General Píka was an urban transition between the freer construction of Rostošovice and the block system of lower Dejvice.
The building was created by architects Henry Malátek, Jiří Eisenreich, Václav Aulický and Jaroří Eismann. Its creation reflected the interest of late socialism in technological progress and the prevailing brutalist tendencies in urbanism.
Architecturally, the construction was characterised by a receding composition of materials on a horizontal base. The basement served for auxiliary technical rooms and the ground floor included an entrance with facilities for staff. On the floor there was a large telecommunication hall surrounded by two floors of service and measuring rooms. The administrative block and the technical offices were located in a smaller cubus on a footstool.
The authors paid particular attention to solving the high heat production of telecommunications technologies. In front of the facade, there was an aluminium facade forming an air layer. This gap was used to drain hot air in the summer and in winter it worked as an isolation. The significant elements were deep octave aluminum shambas with glass skylights and a recognised air-conditioning tube inserted in front of the north and south facades. The engine room and air conditioning were located on the low mezzanine floor below the administrative block and in the superstructure on the roof.
The ensemble was supplemented by a statue by Olbram Zoubek from 1981, standing on a high pedestal in front of the building. Thanks to its architecture, the building was included in the 2009 publication among the famous buildings of Prague 6.
The operation of the building was very expensive due to outdated technologies. Due to the short time distance from origin, the construction was not included in the protected buildings. Therefore, a partial demolition and subsequent reconstruction were decided at the end of 2016.
Today, the administrative centre of Telehouse is located at the site of the original switchboard. The statue of the winner survived the demolition and was moved to the entrance atrium of the new building.
The object serves as a reminder of the technological ambitions of its time and the specific approach to functional architecture. Visiting this place allows you to monitor the transformation of urban space and the fate of technical buildings in Prague.

Welcome to Prague 6, on the street of General Pike. You are standing right in front of a place that carries a fascinating story of technological optimism and a subsequent encounter with the reality of a modern city. In front of you is an object that served as an automatic telephone switchboard during its flowering. If you look at it, you will see a structure that deviates from the traditional picture of Prague streets. It's where two urban areas, Rostovice and Dejvice meet, and this building here served as a significant urban transition, as a bridge between these two areas.
Let us now go back a few decades in time to understand why this building was created and what its original purpose was. Construction of this telephone switchboard began in 1975. At that time, the need for modern infrastructure to connect people was growing stronger and communication technology was developing rapidly. The project was taken up by a team of experienced architects, including Jindřich Malátek, Jiří Eisenreich, Václav Aulický and Jaromíra Eismannová. Together they created a work to be a symbol of progress. The entire construction process lasted several years and the building was definitively completed in 1982. At that time it was the peak of technical thinking, where architecture was not just a beautiful cover, but was intended to be a functioning tool for the operation of complex technology.
Now that you're standing here, please pay attention to the appearance of the building itself. Notice her specific character. The architects here combined elements of so-called brutalism with elements of architecture of high technology. This means that the construction does not hide its technical functions, but instead highlights them and shows them as part of its design. Look carefully at the facade. One of the most distinctive elements is deep octave aluminum shambas that surround the windows and supply the facade with a plastic, rhythmic look. Pay even more attention now to air ducts. Notice how these pipes are boldly pushed out in front of the building. What would be hidden in other buildings in the shafts or on the roof is displayed here, which is typical of the style that celebrates the technique and its function.
When you look at the surface of the building, think about the aluminum facade that is in front of the front. This design was not designed only for aesthetic impression. The aluminum layer created a special air gap. This layer worked as a smart shield for the building. In the hot summer months, it helped to drain excess heat away from the walls, so that the indoor space would not overheat, and in the winter months it would serve as additional insulation against cold. It's a fascinating example of how architects at the time thought about energy and comfort without using today's computer simulations.
Now let's move on to the personalities involved in this place. In addition to the already mentioned architects, you could not miss one very important work of art. In 1981, just before the completion of the entire building, a statue called the Winner was placed in front of the building. The author of this work is famous sculptor Olbram Zoubek. This sculpture gave the technical construction a human dimension and artistic expression, creating an interesting contrast between cold aluminium and concrete and an organic form of art. This combination of technology and art made this place a unique point on the map of Prague 6.
It's interesting to see how the perception of this building has changed over time. While it was just a functional cell phone building for some people, it became an icon for many architecture lovers. In 2009 the construction was officially included among the famous buildings of Prague 6. This shows that even buildings that are hard or unusual at first glance gain value with time and become part of the city's identity.
Anyway, every story has a sadder part of it. Even this unique construction was not immune to economic changes and new demands of the time. The operation of such a large and specific building was linked to very high costs. Since the construction was not protected as a monument to culture, it became the target of the decision to change. At the end of 2016, it was decided on its partial demolition and subsequent reconstruction. It is a sad paradox that a building that was a symbol of future and technological progress eventually became the victim of economic inefficiency.
Today, the building in its original form no longer exists in full, as it was in 1982. Now there are administrative premises in this place, which means that the function of the building has changed from a technical switchboard to office facilities. Nevertheless, it is important to realise what was here. This building reminds us of an era when architects were not afraid to experiment with materials like aluminum and concrete and tried to synthesize technology and art.
Now, when you look around, try to imagine what this place looked like at the time of its greatest boom, when the technique was always humming in the building and before it stood the statue of the Winner as guardian of modern communication. It is a place that teaches us that architecture is a living organism and that its survival depends not only on the quality of the project, but also on social recognition and protection.
Thank you for walking together through the history of this unusual building. I hope you are interested in this information and that you are now seeing more than just ordinary offices in this place. I invite you to further explore the surroundings of Prague 6, where you will find many other hidden corners and architectural attractions waiting for their discovery. I wish you a pleasant rest of the day and an inspirational continuation of your journey through the city. Goodbye.
