Boršov (hrad, okres Svitavy) Ruin

Boršov, also known as Hřebeč, is a medieval castle ruin located west of the village Boršov near Moravská Třebová in the Svitavy District. Founded in the second half of the 13th century, it served as one of the colonization centers during the settlement of the region. The site is notable for its historical significance and architectural features typical of medieval fortifications. Today, Boršov stands as a cultural monument protected by the Czech Republic, offering insights into the feudal past of Bohemia.

The castle was constructed in the late 13th century by Boreš z Rýzmburka to establish it as a center for colonization and regional control. Bedřich ze Šumburka completed the project, acting as guardian for Boreš's underage sons. This period marked significant territorial expansion under the Přemyslid dynasty in Bohemia, reflecting broader European trends towards feudalism and centralized royal authority. Boršov played a role in these efforts to fortify and settle border regions.

Architecturally, Boršov was designed as a single-chambered castle of the bergfrit type, characterized by its strategic defensive features. The site includes two ditches surrounding its core: the first ditch reached up to 9.5 meters in width and was partially filled in, while behind it lay a substantial rampart with a seven-meter-wide crest. A second ditch followed, measuring sixteen meters wide and four meters deep. Although no wall remains were found within the triangular castle core, archaeological evidence confirms the existence of a bergfrit located at the western corner.

Ownership and control of Boršov changed hands over time. Initially owned by Boreš z Rýzmburka, it later came under the management of Bedřich ze Šumburka. The castle eventually fell into disuse in the 14th century after being destroyed by a royal army led by Záviš z Falkenštejna between 1285 and 1286. This event marked a significant turning point, as it underscored the centralizing power of the monarchy over regional lords.

The key historical event associated with Boršov is its capture and destruction in 1285–1286 by Záviš z Falkenštejna's royal army. The castle's posse, which included forces from Třebovské hradisko, had been involved in raids around the area, prompting a military response that led to its downfall. Despite attempts at restoration following this destruction, Boršov ultimately fell into disuse by the end of the 14th century.

Today, Boršov is accessible through an educational trail called Boršovský les, which encircles the ruins and provides visitors with insights into the site's historical context. The remnants of the castle offer a tangible connection to the medieval past, making it a worthwhile destination for those interested in history and architecture. Visitors are invited to explore this cultural monument and reflect on its role in shaping the region's heritage.
