Červená vila, also known as Bink's Villa, is a historically important building in the village of Krucemburk near Havlickov Brod. It was created in 1907- 1909 as the first independent project of architect Josef Gočár. The object is a valuable document of the transitional period of Czech architecture, when the creators were moving away from historism towards modern directions. Since 1958 the villa has been registered as a real-estate cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The construction contract was awarded by Josef Binek, owner of the local tannery and brother-in-law of architect Josef Gočár. At that time Gočár was influenced by the creation of his teacher Jan Kotěra, dealing with the tradition of historism and seeking his own architectural expression. He drew inspiration from trips to England and Holland. In the design of the villa he connected the principles of the English rural house with elements of Czech folk construction.

The construction is on an irregular rectangular plan. It is characterized by a combination of concrete brick masonry, plastered surfaces and sandstone details. The exterior is dominated by a massive saddle roof and a richly decorated wooden shield with Prague sculptor Vojtěch Sucharda. The architect followed up on the representative role of the old Czech quarry. The interior is asymmetric with central floor hall. The facade on the north-west side has significantly affected the internal layout of the operating rooms. The windows are divided by geometric motifs, which refers to the then modernist tendencies.

The interior of the villa in the past decorated works of important Czech artists, including Jan Štursa, František Kaván, Jan Šír, Otakar Nejedý, Otakar Kubín and Vincent Beneš. The ground floor included living rooms, dining room, winter garden and private office owners, so-called laboratory. The interesting thing is that the villa was electrified already at the time of its creation due to its own steam engine in Bink's tannery, when the normal electricity network had not yet existed in the municipality.

Following the nationalisation of the property, the original parcels were divided. This changed the nature of the driveway, which was originally part of the park garden modification. The villa today represents an important example of the early creation of Josef Gočár, in which a period of effort to connect modern housing to tradition is reflected. For those interested in the architecture of the beginning of the 20th century, this object is a valuable study example, which illustrates the development changes of Czech construction. The visit to Krucemburk offers an opportunity to learn about the work that was at the birth of the career of one of the most important Czech architects.

Welcome to Krucemburk. You are standing in front of one of the most important buildings in this place, which must immediately affect you with its unusual colour and strong presence. Červená vila. The name itself must give you an idea of the energy and character that this building radiates in your mind. Before you go any further, stop for a moment and just watch. Feel the atmosphere where history meets art and where every brick tells its own story. Look at the color, the structure, the way the building floats around you. It's a fascinating view of a work that should change the view of how modern houses are built.

Let us now return to time together to understand why this building is so special. Imagine the beginning of the 20th century. The world around us is changing, people are longing for a new one, something that fits their time, but it also retains its roots. It was in these years between 1907 and 1909 that this building was born here in Krucemburk. For the author of the design, Master Josef Gočár, it was a crucial and fateful moment. He had built his ability all along, learned and worked for big names, but here, before you, he could for the first time show his own, separate idea of what a modern building should look like. It is his first great own intention, his first independent work, which was not only part of someone's larger plan, but in his own voice. Imagine the weight of responsibility he must have felt at the time. Creating something that will represent his name throughout his future career was a major challenge. This villa became his first big step into a world where tradition meets new times.

Now pay attention to what you see right in front of you. Look at the body of the building itself and how different materials are mixed here. Notice the beautiful combination of the concrete masonry and smooth, plastered surfaces. These visible bricks give the house strength, depth and feeling of uncompromising stability. They're like the foundation that holds the building together. And right next to them, you'll see those fine, smooth surfaces that create contrast and give the building elegance and lightness. This dialogue between roughness and finesse is deliberate and it is one of the key elements that make this building so interesting. And if you look even higher, your eyes will come across the most striking - a richly decorated wooden shield. It's like the crown of an entire building. In his details there is a fascinating connection between two worlds. The author wanted to link the elements of the rural house from the island state with the deep tradition of our own Czech folk ways of construction. It's like you hear two different melodies, but in this one place they connect beautifully into a harmonious whole. It's a combination of a foreign, exotic sense of space with our own, domestic and close folk art.

This villa is not only about stones, bricks and wood. It is also a place connected to specific people whose names are firmly attached to it. When you look at these walls, remember names like Josef Binek, Vojtěch Sucharda, Jan Štursa or František Kaván. Each of them was part of this world, each of these characters left its mark in the history of this place. Even if you don't need to know everything about them right away, know that their presence gives every detail about the weight and reminds us that every great building is worth human effort, human dreams and human lives.

And now I'm going to tell you something that may really surprise you and what makes this building a real technical miracle of its time. Imagine the beginning of the 20th century. The village you're in now had no electricity at the time. It was dark at night, and the light was something totally special, something people didn't normally have. But this red villa was different. It was electrified at the time of its creation, which was absolutely unprecedented at the time. How was that possible when there were no wires in the village? Thanks to ingenuity and technical progress, this has been done. The nearby tannery had its own steam engine, which provided energy for this very construction. Imagine the magic where the windows of this red building lit up in a dark, quiet village. It was a small island of light in the haze of the time, a symbol of progress and modern life that had just begun to manifest itself here in Krucemburk.

Červená vila is now recognized as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, which is a proof of how much we appreciate this work. It is a monument to human creative power and courage to go their own way. I hope this brief insight into the past has brought you a little joy and new perspective on what you see before you. Please continue to walk, explore the building from other angles and continue to discover the beauty and mystery of this place. Thank you for your visit and let us read this beauty again in silence and peace. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surroundings of the villa and the castle awaken to life. Light green leaves and blossoming flowers give the place freshness and hope. We recommend wearing more layers of clothing because the weather is variable. The best thing is to come in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

The summer season brings sharp sun and rich colors that highlight the red shade of the villa. Nature is in full bloom and the atmosphere is full of energy. Due to the largest number of visitors it is advisable to arrive first thing in the morning. Don't forget light summer clothes and plenty of fluids.

In autumn, the landscape around the monuments turns into golden and brown tones, which matches the historical character of the buildings. A fog wound creates a mysterious mood. Practical are waterproof shoes and a warm sweater. The ideal time for visiting is late afternoon, when light gently hits the wall.

In winter, the snowy landscape is peaceful and majestic, while the white snow contrasts beautifully with the color of the villa. The atmosphere is quiet and stopped in time. It is necessary to wear warm thermal clothing and tight shoes. The opening times are shorter in advent time, so we recommend planning the way forward.
