The Čížová Chateau is located in a small village northwest of Sand in South Bohemia. It is a cultivated building which still retains its architectural charm and is protected as a cultural monument. Building No. 1 is among the most preserved witnesses of the long past of this place.

The beginnings of the Chinese date back to 1560, when the Deym family from Srtej purchased the village here and made it the centre of a smaller noble estate. The Renaissance fortress was probably founded by one of the first family members: Jan Deym of Srtej or his eldest son, Nicholas. Over time, the Deyms became owners of a fixed farm. During the 30-year war and the subsequent state uprising (1618-1620), the family showed various loyalty. While one of the members was accused of taking part in the uprising, in 1623, after his transition to Catholic faith, he was acquitted of the trial of post-white mountain confiscation. Around 1629 he had the chateau expanded and rebuilt.

The chateau was held in the Deym family until the first quarter of the eighteenth century. The course of the inheritance was complicated: after the death of 1683, the property was divided between sons, until it finally reached Jan Peter Deym. He played a key role in the new history of the chateau. In 1698 he extended the estate to Oldřichov and initiated the reconstruction of the original Renaissance fortress into the form of a baroque-romantic chateau. However, the high financial burden led him to sell assets in 1715. The Chernins' family from Chudenice was purchased by Chezh, from which it eventually reached Lobkovice.

Under the administration of Lobkovický, Čížová became the center of economic activities. In 1753 Marie Ludmila, daughter of the owner František Antonín Černín, married Prince Augustus Antonín of Lobkovice. Although Mělík was the source of her inheritance, she also paid attention to her South Bohemian estates. In China, she had the church of St. James, initiated the creation of the cemetery chapel of St. Barbara and had the hospital built at the church. In 1770, a school was established from the neighbouring hermit. However, the chateau itself gradually faded at the time because the Lobkovics did not live there and the administration of the estate was concentrated in Drhovla.

It was only in 1872 that the location of the forest administration, which was part of the decentralisation of the lobbyists, brought a new impetus. Since then the chateau has served practical purposes of agriculture and forestry. The Čížová brewery was later built in the adjacent economic building, which still works here today. Thus, the place that had undergone the transformation from the Renaissance fortress through the Baroque residence to the economic centre became an atypical but authentic witness of Czech history.

Čížová Castle stands in the village of the same name northwest of Písek. Its origins date back to the second half of the sixteenth century. In fifteen sixty, the Deym family from Stříteže purchased the village and made it the center of a smaller noble estate. A Renaissance stronghold was built here, founded either by Jan Deym from Stříteže or his eldest son Mikuláš.

Later the estate was held by Jan the Younger Deym from Stříteže. After the suppression of the Estates Revolt in the years sixteen eighteen to sixteen twenty, he was accused of participating in it. However, in sixteen twenty-three, after converting to the Catholic faith, he was acquitted. Around sixteen twenty-nine he had the stronghold expanded and a year later he died. A description of the stronghold has survived from the probate proceedings. The property at that time included two farms and a brewery is mentioned here for the first time.

There followed a series of inheritances and divisions of property among family members. In sixteen eighty-five, Čížová passed to Jan Jindřích Deym. His share included a multi-story stone stronghold with a chapel, a school, a farm, and the villages of Zlivice, Skrýšov, Borečnice and Krašovice. In sixteen ninety, Čížová was sold to his brother Jan Petr. He expanded the estate to include Oldřichov and probably was responsible for the reconstruction of the stronghold into a Baroque castle. However, heavy financial burdens forced him to sell. In seventeen hundred and one he offered Čížová to the princes from Eggenburg. The transaction did not take place, but from the same year a detailed description of the estate and castle has survived.

Eventually Čížová was acquired by the Černín family from Chudenice. The sale was confirmed by a contract from seventeen twenty-six, concluded between Count Václav Ignác Deym from Stříteže and František Antonín Černín. From then on, Čížová belonged to the Drhov estate. Černín's only daughter Marie Ludmila married Prince August Antonín from Lobkovice in seventeen fifty-three. In Čížová she had the Church of Saint James renovated, she contributed to the establishment of a burial chapel of Saint Barbara, a hospital was built near the church, and in seventeen seventy a school was set up there from a neighboring hermitage.

However, the castle itself fell into decay. The Lobkovices did not live there, the manor administration was seated in Drhov, and the castle served agricultural purposes. It regained some life in eighteen seventy-two when a forest administration was established there.

The castle building is today protected as a cultural monument. In the adjacent agricultural building, the Čížová brewery operates.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, the chateau will be surrounded by awakening nature and fresh greenery. The atmosphere is full of optimism and the air smells of first flowers. We recommend to dress in layered clothes because the weather in South Bohemia is very variable in this period. It is best to visit the memory in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

The summer season brings intense sun and rich green parks that provide a pleasant shade. Expect more visitors in the main season, so it is advisable to come right at the opening to avoid the biggest crowds. Remember light clothes, hat and plenty of fluids to keep hydration.

In autumn the surroundings of the chateau turn into golden and red tones, creating a nostalgic mood. Fog above the landscape gives the place mystery and peace. It is practical to choose waterproof shoes and a warm sweater. For the best photo images we recommend arriving shortly before sunset when the light is softest.

In winter, the monument is dreamy, especially if it is covered by a layer of snow and freezing air. There is peace and quiet, which contrasts with summer noise. It is necessary to wear warm thermal clothing and tight shoes.
