Divišova čtvrť, also called Shanghai, is a historic settlement and probably the largest emergency colony in Brno. It came into existence after 1925 in a steep south slope above the Královopolské strojárny. This conservation site is located in the city of Brno-north, in the south-west of the cadastral area Lesná. In 2021, almost 500 inhabitants lived here. Its preserved state and specific development represents a unique proof of working-class living in the interwar period.

In the period after the First World War and during the 1920s Czechoslovakia faced a shortage of flats and growing urbanization associated with industrial development. This has led to the creation of so-called emergency colonies in many cities, where socially weaker populations and workers have built their own temporary homes. The axis of the colony was created by Divish Street. At that time, the eastern edge of the forest covering the U Antoniček valley reached to it, with the western part of the colony at the expense of part of the forest. Originally, the settlement was called the Divish Colony and on September 25, 1946 it acquired its current name Divišova čtvrť. In 1969 the settlement became part of the newly established cadastral territory Lesná. After a number of changes in belonging to urban districts, Brno-North became part of the city district in 1990.

The construction consisted of houses originally of an emergency and temporary character, which people built on their own in a steep southern slope over the machinery plant. The living room was purely temporary. Their owners had to commit to the city that they would tear them down at their own expense without compensation if Brno demanded it. The orchard grew gradually and in 1929 it had already 150-4 houses. Until 1966, Divišova čtvrť was known as all the streets of Trtílka. On 18 May 1966 the individual streets received their own names according to various plants, while the central street remained the shortened name Divišova. In 1999 there was also a new street called Čenková.

The land and houses in this colony were subject to specific conditions of use, as the owners carried a commitment to possible future demolition at their own expense. In the early 1950s, a high emblem of the translated railway line Brno - Havlíčkova Brod was built just along the neighbourhood in the southwest. Although it significantly disrupted the view from the district towards Brno, it, on the other hand, isolated it from the surrounding area and prevented any expansion of industrial facilities from the main street of Křižík.

Among the key moments in the history of the settlement are 1925, when it was formed as an emergency colony of workers from the Králové Opolské Engineering Plant, and 1946 when the name was changed from the Diviš colony to Divišova čtvrť. In 1969 the settlement became part of the cadastral territory of Lesná and in 1999 a new street was founded. The Osa also bears the popular name Shanghai. In its surroundings there is a valley U Antoníčka, a settlement Lesná and Královo Pole.

Divišova čtvrť has been preserved almost in its original form. The set of facade of many houses is protected as a cultural monument. For car transport, the neighborhood is impassable, there is a total ban on entering outside the traffic service and many of them are both blind and physically. The settlement can be reached from the south from Křižík street, from the east from the Ořežní street on the settlement Lesná or for pedestrians and cyclists from the Sad Valley U Antoníček. Public transport is provided by busy bus stops Divišova čtvrť and Nightingale. About 700 metres from the centre of the district lies the tram loop of the Certova gorge.

This historic settlement represents a valuable proof of emergency housing in the 1920s, which, despite complex developments, has retained its authentic character. Visiting this place offers a unique view of Brno's construction history. It is worth including it in the itinerary of every person interested in architecture and urban planning.

Welcome to this extraordinary place that breathes through history and an unrepeatable atmosphere. You are standing in front of the Divišová district, an interesting and historic settlement in Brno, which is probably the largest emergency colony in the entire territory of our city. Look around you and try to perceive the unique nature of the local environment, which is so significantly different from the surrounding modern settlements. When you look in front of you, you see the confusion of the smaller houses planted in the landscape that have grown here as a silent witness to past times and human ingenuity.

Let's move forward in time and see how this settlement came to be. The year is one thousand nine hundred twenty-five, and in the steep south slope over the then great factory, which everyone knows as the Royal Polish Engineering, begins to write the story of this place. There's an emergency colony that gets called the Divish colony. The purpose is very clear and prosaic, this place is to serve as a quick and affordable housing for workers working in a nearby factory who need a roof over their heads. The times are hard, so people take their own destiny and build their own homes in a challenging terrain slope.

Now pay attention to the very form of the structures you have right in front of you. Note how the houses are arranged and how sensitively they copy the slope of the slope over the former engineering plant. These houses were purely temporary at the time of their creation. It was an emergency home where no one expected to stand here forever. At that time, the owners of these small houses had to make a written commitment to the city that if the authorities ever demanded it in the future, they would tear down the whole building at their own expense. However, despite these strict conditions and temporary determinations, the orchard did not eventually disappear, endured and preserved until today to tell us its story.

Let's take a closer look at the changes this place has been through over the decades. The year one thousand nine hundred forty-six brings an important change, the original name of the Divish colony is changing and the settlement is becoming officially called Divišova čtvrť. Time goes on and the city grows around her. A few decades later, namely in the year one thousand nine hundred sixty-nine, this entire settlement becomes a solid part of the newly established cadastral territory, which bears the name Lesná. And the development does not end here, at the very end of the twentieth century, in the year one thousand and nine hundred and ninety, there is a brand new street with a new building, which is given the picturesque name Chenková, which writes another chapter in the life of this site.

I'm sure you'll be interested in a popular name that is firmly connected to this place. The locals and people from all over Brno like to call the Diviš district Shanghai. This interesting name reflects the fact that it is probably the largest emergency colony in Brno, which was created in the steep south slope over the Kralopolské opolské strojárny. Imagine the beginnings when the dwelling was purely temporary, and their owners had to make promises about possible demolition. Yet a living community of people grew up here, who breathed in their humble living and made a home in the middle of the slope.

Finally, we would like to invite you to further explore this fascinating corner of Brno. Walk down the streets, feel the atmosphere of a place where hard working history combines with the tenacity of the people who refused to leave their homes. Thank you for listening to our audio guide, and we wish you a wonderful experience in rediscovering the history of our city. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

To visit the Diviš district in the Brno Forest, it is best to choose the morning clock in sunny weather, when the sun beautifully illuminates the steep southern slope and picturesque alleys of the historic emergency colony, also known as Shanghai. Take your fixed shoes with you on the trip, because the terrain in the slope above the former machine shop is chipped, and don't forget the camera, the best pictures of the impressive houses are taken from elevated places above the valley. When photographing you will capture the unique atmosphere of the old workers' development contrasting with the surrounding modern landscape. Families with children can take a walk as a discovery of hidden corners, however, it is necessary to take greater care due to unpaved roads and steep slopes. In the vicinity within 30 minutes walk you can visit the immediate adjoining valley U Antoníčka, the Lesná settlement or head towards the Královo Pole district.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings awakening nature to the slopes above the Brno basin, where green gardens and trees begin to bloom. The lighting is very pleasant and soft thanks to the extended days, which creates a calm atmosphere ideal for the perception of the specific functionalist architecture of this settlement. During this period you will not meet large crowds of tourists because the area serves mainly the local population. Wear firm shoes in a slightly damp terrain and a light jacket against spring wind. The best time for a walk is in the late morning, when the sun warms pleasantly, but the air remains fresh.

Summer offers lush greenery of fully foliage trees that provide a welcome shadow in narrow streets and between apartment houses. The sunlight is very intense, bright light creates interesting shadows on the facades of houses and the atmosphere is lively, but still. Because it's a residential neighborhood, the crowds don't exist here, but in the steam days, it's necessary to count on fewer people outside around noon. We recommend taking breathtaking clothes, headgear and plenty of drinking water, because climbing up the slope takes a lot of work. The best time to visit is early in the morning or in the evening, when temperatures fall and light is most suitable for the observation of urbanism.

Autumn turns the surrounding slopes into a colorful palette of shades of yellow, orange and red, which perfectly complements the distinctive character of the place. The atmosphere is melancholy, often accompanied by morning fog, which gives this part of Brno a mysterious touch. Tourism practically does not exist here, so you can enjoy complete peace. Warmer layered clothes, waterproof shoes and windbreaker are suitable for a walk, as the weather is variable. The ideal time for a tour is early afternoon, when the fog will recede and the rays of the weaker sun can still illuminate the landscape.

Winter covers the whole area in silence, sometimes under a layer of snow, which underlines the raw and clean lines of the local construction tradition. The lighting is short, the sun sets early in the afternoon and the shadow quickly passes into the night calm overlooking the illuminated city down in the valley. People tend to stay inside, so the streets are empty. Winter clothes, i.e. warm jacket, hat, gloves and tight shoes with anti-slip sole are necessary for a successful walk without freezing. The best time to visit is around noon, when the lights are the most and temperatures are the most favourable.
