The Church of Blessed Marie Restituta in Brno-Lesná is a modern Roman Catholic church designed by architect Marko Jan Štěpán. Constructed between 2017 and 2020, it features a circular floor plan with a prominent tower reaching 31 meters high. Located in the Lesná district of Brno, this church serves as the parish church for the Brno-Lesná community. It includes a spiritual center, social hall, and underground parking. Its design incorporates large circular windows and a lookout on top of the tower, making it a notable addition to the area's architectural landscape.

The idea for the Church of Blessed Marie Restituta was conceived after 1968 but did not progress during the normalization period in Czechoslovakia. It gained momentum following the Velvet Revolution, which marked significant political and social changes in the country. This era saw increased freedom and opportunities for new projects that reflected contemporary styles. Fundraising efforts led to the accumulation of 40 million Czech koruna by 2014, enabling construction to move forward.

An architectural competition was held in February 2012 to select a design for the church. Ateliér Štěpán won this competition in June 2014, proposing a circular plan with a separate tower made of exposed concrete. The church's construction began with the laying of its foundation stone on September 5, 2017. By 2019, the rough construction was completed, allowing for the first service to be held in November of that year. The church was officially consecrated on September 12, 2020.

The Church of Blessed Marie Restituta is architecturally significant due to its circular floor plan and prominent tower. The tower, made from exposed concrete, stands 31 meters high and includes a lookout accessible to the public. A large circular window adorns the upper part of the church, adding to its modern aesthetic. Initially, the interior featured provisional wooden pews sourced from Staré Město's Church of the Holy Spirit. In December 2019, a set of 16 bells crafted by Leticie Vránová-Dytrychová was blessed for the church.

The church is administered by the Brno-Lesná parish, established on January 1, 2005. The initial phase of development included opening a spiritual center in October 2004, setting the stage for future construction. Jan Vejmělek, a long-time sacristan at the local parish, played a significant role in the church's establishment and even participated in its first service—a diamond wedding celebration.

Today, the Church of Blessed Marie Restituta stands as a modern architectural landmark in Brno-Lesná. While some interior elements remain provisional, such as the wooden pews, plans are underway to replace them with more permanent fixtures like a stone altar and eventually install an organ. The church is accessible for regular services, which began on May 31, 2020, following its consecration.

Visitors to Brno-Lesná can appreciate this modern architectural marvel not only for its unique design but also for its role in the community as a spiritual center. Its blend of contemporary style and functional elements makes it a noteworthy site worth exploring. Whether interested in architecture or spirituality, the Church of Blessed Marie Restituta offers an enriching experience that reflects both historical significance and modern innovation.

Guide

Welcome to the Church of Blessed Marie Restituta in Brno-Lesná, a remarkable modern Roman Catholic church that stands as a testament to contemporary architectural innovation and spiritual devotion. As you stand here, take a moment to absorb your surroundings. The structure before you boasts a circular floor plan, its design both bold and harmonious with the landscape of this serene Jihomoravský kraj location.

The genesis of this church is deeply rooted in history, tracing back to ideas conceived after 1968. However, it was only following the Velvet Revolution that these plans truly came to fruition. The foundation stone for the church was laid in 2017, marking the beginning of a new era for the Brno-Lesná community. By 2019, the rough construction had been completed, and even before its official consecration in 2020, the first service took place within these walls.

Architect Marko Jan Štěpán envisioned this church as more than just a place of worship; it is a spiritual hub that includes a social hall and underground parking. As you look around, notice how the prominent tower rises gracefully to 31 meters high, dominating the skyline with its modern elegance. The circular design invites contemplation and community gathering, embodying both function and form.

While there are no specific historical figures tied to this church's creation, it stands as a symbol of resilience and progress in post-revolutionary Czechoslovakia. It reflects how political changes can significantly influence architectural projects, turning long-held dreams into reality.

An interesting aspect of its construction is the use of provisional wooden pews during the building phase. This pragmatic approach allowed for immediate functionality while maintaining flexibility throughout the development process.

As you continue to explore this spiritual sanctuary, feel free to delve deeper into its design and purpose. The church serves as a parish center for the Brno-Lesná community, where spirituality and social interaction intertwine seamlessly. We invite you to take your time discovering the unique elements that make this church not just an architectural marvel but also a vibrant heart of the local community.

Thank you for joining us on this journey through history and design. May your visit here inspire reflection and appreciation for the beauty and resilience embodied in these walls.
