Dolní Landhauska is a villa located in Havlíčkovy sady, also known as Gröbovka or Grébovka, within Prague 2's Vinohrady district, near Vršovice and Nusle. Developed between 1871 and 1888 by industrialist Moritz Gröbe, this historical site is part of a larger park that blends Renaissance and Romantic architectural styles. Recognized as a cultural monument since 1964, it reflects Prague's rich history and heritage.

The area surrounding Dolní Landhauska dates back to the 13th century when vineyards were first established on Nuselského údolí Botiče's sunny slopes. In the 14th century, Karel IV introduced French viticulture techniques, enhancing wine production in the region. Over time, Halířovský grunt evolved into a significant estate, initially serving Jesuit members after the Thirty Years' War before becoming part of Moritz Gröbe’s ambitious project in the 1860s to create an architectural legacy.

Architecturally, Dolní Landhauska underwent several transformations. Dr. Josef Lumbe, an educator at Pražská polytechnika and its last director, made early 19th-century modifications to both Dolní and Horní Landhauska, converting parts of the vineyards into gardens. Moritz Gröbe later acquired the property in the 1860s and commissioned architect Alois Türk to design a smaller villa on the site, marking extensive construction efforts that included building surrounding walls.

Ownership has seen several notable figures over time. After serving Jesuit members, Antonín Haniš z Greifenthalu acquired it post-Thirty Years' War. Ownership then passed through František Václav Pachta z Rájova in the early 19th century, followed by Kašpar Vintr and Jakub Wimmer. Dr. Josef Lumbe owned it before Moritz Gröbe took over in the 1860s.

Throughout its history, Dolní Landhauska has witnessed significant events that shaped its legacy. The Thirty Years' War caused considerable damage to the region, reflecting broader European conflicts of the era. In more recent times, the park's development and subsequent designation as a cultural monument underscored its historical importance. By 2015, reconstruction efforts were recognized with the Patrimonium pro futuro award for excellence in heritage conservation.

Today, Dolní Landhauska is part of Havlíčkovy sady, featuring Renaissance and Romantic architecture, including Gröbe's Villa, pavilions, a grotto, and a wine cellar added in 2012. The park also includes a children’s playground, enhancing its appeal as a family-friendly destination. Visitors can explore the site's rich history and enjoy its serene environment, making it a worthwhile visit for those interested in Prague's cultural heritage.

Dolní Landhauska stands as a testament to the historical evolution of Prague, offering insights into both local and broader European developments over centuries. Its preservation allows visitors to appreciate the architectural ingenuity and cultural significance that have shaped this unique site. Whether drawn by its history or simply wishing to enjoy a peaceful stroll through beautifully maintained gardens, Dolní Landhauska invites exploration and reflection on its enduring legacy.

Dolní Landhauska is one of two old farmsteads in the Prague park Havlíčkovy sady, which is also called Gröbovka or Grébovka. The park is located on Vinohrad, not far from Vršovic and Nuslí, and to the south it is bordered by the Botič stream. From Dolní Landhauska, a water channel once led to the Nuselský mill.

The slopes above the Botič have been a wine-growing region since ancient times. Vineyards originated here in the thirteenth century, and they were given solid foundations in the fourteenth century by Charles IV, who had noble grape vines imported from abroad and planted them on the northern slopes of Nuselské údolí valley as well.

Dolní Landhauska, house number sixty, was built together with the neighboring Horní Landhauska at the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century. At that time, both farmsteads were called Halířovský grunt. After the Thirty Years War, Horní Landhauska belonged to the Jesuit order and together with Dolní Landhauska served as a summer house for sick and elderly members of the order.

After the Jesuits, the farmstead with the surrounding fields and vineyards was acquired by Antonín Haniš z Greifenthalu. At the beginning of the nineteenth century it passed into the possession of František Václav Pachta z Rájova, then Kašpar Vintra and Jakub Wimmer. The next owner was court councilor Josef Lumbe, who lived from eighteen hundred one to eighteen seventy-nine. He taught agricultural subjects at the Prague Polytechnic and was also the last director of this school. He had both Landhauskas structurally renovated and converted part of the vineyards and gardens into orchards.

In the eighteen sixties, the Prague industrialist Moritz Gröbe, a partner in the Lanna and Šebek company, bought Dolní Landhauska from Lumbe. In eighteen seventy he also purchased Horní Landhauska and parts of the surrounding gardens. On the combined plots, from eighteen seventy-one to eighteen eighty-eight, he built a villa with an extensive park, which today occupies eleven hectares including a vineyard.

The site has been a cultural monument since nineteen sixty-four. Since nineteen ninety-nine it has been managed by the Prague 2 municipal district, which began an extensive renovation in two thousand one because of its deterioration, including the greenery and paths. The reconstruction was completed in two thousand fourteen and a year later received the award Patrimonium pro futuro, which the National Heritage Institute presents for achievements in heritage care.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit Dolní Landhauska is during the late spring or early fall when the weather is mild, and the park's natural beauty is at its peak. During these seasons, the foliage provides a stunning backdrop for the villa and surrounding structures like pavilions and the grotto. Additionally, visiting on weekdays can help avoid larger crowds typically found on weekends.

Public transportation is recommended as it provides convenient access to the site. It’s advisable to check current public transport options online before your visit for the most efficient route.

When planning a visit, consider bringing comfortable walking shoes as there are several areas within Havlíčkovy sady to explore. A light jacket or umbrella might be useful due to unpredictable weather changes in Prague. For those interested in photography, the best spots include the pavilions and grotto near the Botič stream, where natural lighting enhances the picturesque scenery.

For families with children, Havlíčkovy sady offers a pleasant environment for leisurely walks and exploration of its historical structures. The park's open spaces are ideal for picnics or casual games. Nearby attractions within 30 minutes include the Vršovice Market Hall and the Nusle Bridge, both offering additional cultural experiences and scenic views.
