Dům kultury Liberec is a concert hall on Souken Square 3 in Liberec. The building was completed in 1985. It excels in brutalist architecture with characteristic glass bevelled roofs.

The building was planned in the 1950s as part of the reconstruction of the city centre. The original intention was to build a service centre, which was to include a Jested department store and a house of culture. While the department store was established earlier, the Liberec Building Project did not design the cultural house until 1976.

The project was developed in cooperation of architects Pavel Vaněček and Pavel Švancer, but the original extensive plan was later reduced. The entire realized object was prepared by Pavel Vaněček. The unrealised part was to include a multicinema with three halls and an administrative-business section. This would exceed the central part in height and have more significant technical elements, such as the granted lattice structures. The resulting construction from 1985 is more sophisticated compared to the original design.

A stand-alone building measures 70 metres in length and 55 metres in width. The dominant feature is glazed bevelled roofs that provide better lighting of the inner spaces. It's why the locals call the building caskets. There is a modernist fountain in front of the building.

The interior follows a brutal and technical architecture using rich warm colors, especially red and yellow. The surface finish is made of concrete bricks and linear carriers. The premises also include works of art. The dominance is a large variable hall suitable for concerts and balls that surround corridors and administration rooms.

The operation of the building caused problems with the summer overheating due to the glazed roof. In the first decade of the 21st century, therefore, glass was replaced in these parts of the roof and social facilities were reconstructed. In 2015 a small hall was set up on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the building.

The concert hall is situated in the centre of the city, surrounded by a park and bounded by the river Lusatia from the south side. On the west side, Janska Street is adjacent to the building. Access is possible from the tram stop Rybník.

The building represents a typical example of architecture in the second half of the 20th century and its technical solution. We recommend that you visit her as part of a tour of the modern urbanism of Liberec.

Architectural development

The original plan included a larger administrative-business project which was eventually reduced. Architects Pavel Vaněček and Pavel Švancera designed the building as part of the service centre of the city. Over the years, cooling problems have emerged due to glazed roofs, which led to a reconstruction of glass.

Welcome, you're standing in front of the House of Culture in Liberec, right on Southwest Square number three. In front of you, there is a massive structure with characteristic glass bevelled roofs that capture the sun's rays and cast golden reflections on the surrounding pavement. The whole building looks firm and open at the same time, as if it wanted to invite every bystander inside to experience music, theatre and social events taking place here. Notice how massive stone walls alternate with large glass surfaces - the contrast between heavy and light, between dark and light is a typical sign of the time when the house was built.

Let's see how this building came into being. In the 1950s, a major reconstruction of the city centre started in Liberec. It was planned to create a complex that would include not only the Jested department store, but also the cultural centre and other public spaces. However, the project remained unfinished - the part that was supposed to be a multicinema was never built. Nevertheless, in 1976 a concrete proposal for a cultural house was made by the construction company Stavoprojekt Liberec. The design was taken over by a team of architects led by Pavel Vaněček and Pavel Švancer. The construction began and for nine years of hard work, in 1985, the house finally opened up to the public. Since then it has mainly served as a concert hall where music performances, festivals and various social events are held.

Now pay attention to the architecture surrounding you. The House of Culture is an example of the brutalist style that dominated many public buildings at the time. Massive concrete and brick walls, often left in natural, unframed colour, create the impression of strength and resistance. The interior, although not completely visible from the outside, is characterized by warm, rich colours and the use of solid bricks, which gives space cosy and at the same time resembles the technical trends of the time. The glazed bevelled roofs are not only an aesthetic element but also a practical one - they allow natural lighting of the main hall while providing a view of the city panorama. If you look up, you'll notice how the roofs slightly rise to the central point, creating a dynamic sense of movement and openness.

Key stories related to this place are closely linked to its function and to the people who worked here. After opening in 1985, the house quickly became the center of cultural life in Liberec. Over the years, both local artists and major musicians from all over the country performed here. Although specific historical figures are not detailed in the available sources, it is certain that generations of young musicians and theatrical creators have found the first opportunity for public expression here. In 2015, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the completion of the construction, a small hall was established, which serves as a space for smaller concerts, workshops and community meetings. This hall complements the main concert space and allows the use of the house even for more intimate events.

The interesting thing that can impress a visitor is the very change of glass on a glazed roof. Between 2000 and 2009, the original glass panels were replaced with more modern, energy-efficient options. This not only improved the insulation of the building, but also restored its original shiny appearance, which over the years was slightly matte. The reconstruction of social facilities, which was part of the same period, brought more comfortable and functional spaces for visitors and house workers. This modernization shows how the house can adapt to new requirements while maintaining its historical character.

Now that you have this impressive object in front of you, come and look at its surroundings. The southwest square where the house stands is a lively part of the city, surrounded by cafes, shops and other public buildings. The atmosphere is vibrating here with the daily noise of people who stop to enjoy a moment of rest or to see the architectural details of the house. If you look at the facade, you will notice that massive brick blocks are supplemented by fine window sections that release light into the inner space. This dialogue between meat and lightness is a typical feature of brutalist design and gives the building a unique character.

In conclusion, I invite you to explore this place again. Enter if you have the chance, and let yourself be carried away by the acoustics of the main hall, which is designed to make every tone clear and understandable. See the smaller hall, where workshops and meetings of local creators are often held. Whether you are here for the first time, or coming back after years, the house of culture in Liberec offers new impetus and inspiration. Thank you for listening to this sound guide, and we wish you a pleasant time in the heart of a liberian cultural life. Say goodbye to this place with a smile and look forward to the other discoveries that await you in this historic city.
