The House of Olympic Palace, originally called Germania, is a representative spa building in the centre of Karlovy Vary. Built in the years 1907-1910 in the style of late Art Nouveau with baroque details, it represents a quality architectural example of the time. This palace is not only a cultural heritage of the city, but also a testament to its history and changes.

The history of this object dates back to the original Stadler family house called Germania. This house was rebuilt in 1860 according to the plans of local builder George Fülly. In the early 20th century, the owner Friedrich Stadler had a new, larger house built in the same place. The position of the new building was defined in 1906 and the original building plans were drawn up by the Karlovy Vary architect Otto Stainl. The final project was completed by architect Alfred Bayer, while the construction was supervised by Josef Waldert between 1907 and 1910.

Architecturally, dům Olympic Palace is a busy spa building. Its eight-axis facade is richly composed and revived by balconies, which contributes to its distinctive appearance. In the segment shield there is a statue of Liberty with a crown of seven rays, holding the torch and scroll of parchment. This statue replaced the original planned statue of winged Germania.

After 1918 the building was named Hotel Olympic Palace. After World War II, the building was named the Marx Spa House, which refers to the stay of Karl Marx in the original pension Germania between 1874 and 1876. His presence is highlighted by a commemorative plate with the relief of the face of Karl Marx, which was installed at the entrance of the house.

In 1991, dům Olympic Palace was declared a cultural monument and has since been protected. Currently (August 2021) is registered as a facility owned by KZET a.s. It is operated as a spa hotel Olympic Palace, which reflects its original purpose.

Today dům Olympic Palace is not only a monument to architecture, but also a place full of historical associations. Its importance for Karlovy Vary lies in both its architectural art and its connection to important personalities and past events. For visitors it is a place that offers a view of the rich history of the city and its spa tradition.

The Olympic Palace House is worth visiting not only for those interested in architecture, but also for anyone who wants to zoom in on the history and cultural heritage of Karlovy Vary. Its significant past and current function as a spa hotel makes it a unique place that combines tradition with modern city life.

Welcome to Karlovy Vary, one of the largest spa cities in the world! You are standing in front of an important historical landmark - the Olympic Palace. This impressive object already addresses you by far with its beautiful facade, which is richly decorated and shows characteristic elements of a late Art Nouveau with baroque details. Look up at the segment shield - there stands the Statue of Liberty, which adds to the facade of grandeur and elegance.

Let's look at the history of this important object. The House of Olympic Palace was built between 1907 and 1910 in the style of late Art Nouveau, which is an architectural direction characteristic of the late nineteenth century with its rich ornamental style. Architects Otto Stainl and Alfred Bayer contributed to the creation of this impressive spa house, which was originally named Germania. Before this period, namely in 1860, another building was built on site, which was rebuilt by the local builder Georg Fülly.

Notice now the details of architecture. The facade of the house is eight-axis and richly composed with balconies, which give the object both grandeur and character. The Statue of Liberty at the centre of the shield adds symbolic value to the entire facade and it is a distinctive element that you can choose to view.

As for the key stories associated with this monument, after 1918 the building became Hotel Olympic Palace. After World War II, she served as a Spa House. In 1991 the building was declared a cultural monument, which confirms its importance not only for Karlovy Vary but also for wider historical and cultural contexts.

The interesting thing is that this house persists as a testament to the changes in the region, from the name Germania to the current Olympic Palace. It is proof not only of architectural art, but also of the history of the city and its transformations.

Now that we've gone through the basic information on this fascinating object, we're going to invite you to further explore Karlovy Vary. There are many other spa monuments and historical sites waiting for your visit. Whether you want to look at other baths, explore streets with their characteristic buildings or drink classic Karlovy Vary tea, Karlovy Vary offers many attractions. Thank you for your visit to the Olympic Palace and we wish you a nice tour of the rest of this beautiful spa town!

Tips for visitors

For the best visual experience of architecture we recommend a visit during a bright day when the falling light best highlights the decorative details of Art Nouveau style. For the best photos I recommend to watch the morning or afternoon light, which will illuminate the facade of the building beautifully.

Transportation to the palace is possible by foot, car and public transport. Please check the current connection and means of transport in the search engine. If you arrive by car, parking in the city centre is recommended to check in advance.

With us we recommend to take comfortable shoes suitable for walking around the city tile and possibly a camera to capture beautiful details of the building.

For families with children, walking near this historic building is an interesting opportunity to observe urban architecture, while it is necessary to count on movement in a busy urban environment.
