Fantova budova hlavního nádraží, located in Prague's Vinohrady district, is the largest Art Nouveau monument in the Czech Republic. It was created between 1901 and 1909 according to the design of architect Josef Fant and was originally used for the handling of passengers. Today it is protected as a cultural monument because of its historical value. It also became part of the city's historical zone Vinohrady, Žižkov and Vršovice. Since 2012, its gradual reconstruction has been carried out, which is intended to restore the construction of the original design and expand its use.

The creation of the building is closely related to the beginning of the 20th century, when the Czech Republic underwent an intensive cultural and national revival. The architecture of the time was influenced by various European styles, including Art Nouveau. Fant's object was created at the site of the original exposition building from 1869-1871. However, due to the rapid development of rail transport, it soon ceased to comply. In 1892 there was an extension of the railway track and in 1898 they worked out a project for the total reconstruction of the railway station approved by the Ministry of Railways. The architectural competition for the new building of Prague Main Station won Josef Fanta. His design was inspired by the North Station in Paris.

The architecture of the building is typically Art Nouveau. The implementation took place in stages in full operation; the original castle station was gradually dismantled and replaced by a new object. The mass distribution of the design, consisting of a central hall with side wings, referred again to the North Station in Paris. Stanislav Succharda and Ladislav Šaloun became the main authors of the sculpture decoration. Steel, rivets and glass panes were used when building the hall above the platform.

Fant's building went through various stages of ownership and administration. After the Second World War, several studies were created to increase the capacity of the railway station. In 1976 the building was registered among the cultural monuments and in 1993 it became part of the urban monument zone Vinohrady, Žižkov and Vršovice. The opening of the new hall in 1977 cut off the building from the movement of passengers, which reduced its use.

The key events were the opening of the new hall on July 1, 1977 and the construction of the North-South Magistrate on the roof of the building. These changes significantly affected its function and the object lost part of its original destination. The former cashier's offices were transformed into the Fantova café and the cultural hall on the second floor was occupied by the theatre ensemble Prodivádlo.

Today, Fant's building is known for its historical significance and architectural beauty. Interiors and exteriors are often used by filmmakers, which increases her popularity. The current reconstruction returns the original look to the building and extends the possibilities of its use, thus increasing the attractiveness of visitors. The construction is worth visiting not only as a monument to historical architecture, but also as a place full of life and culture.

The building is a reminder of the rich history and development of Prague. Its reconstruction and protection ensure that future generations can admire its beauty and understand its importance. Visiting Fant's building is a necessity for people interested in the history of architecture or a rich cultural offer.

Welcome, distinguished visitors. Please stop for a moment, take a breath and fully see the space you are in. You are standing in the area of Vinohrady in front of a building that is not just an ordinary house but a real witness to the history, expansion of transport and aesthetic ambitions of our ancestors. The Fantova budova hlavního nádraží stands before you. The first impression it gives is the impression of stability, magnificence and certain nobility, which is no longer so common in the hasty rhythm of the modern city. Take a look at its overall form and perceive the atmosphere of this place, where thousands of fates, goodbyes and joyous reunions meet.

To understand why this building looks just like this, we need to go back more than 150 years together. The history of this place has not begun with the building you see now. The first shipping building in this place was created between 1869 and 1871. At that time, the railway was a symbol of absolute progress and change. Prague grew, the city expanded, and the need for an effective connection with the outside world was growing. However, as time progressed, the original capacity was not sufficient. Already in 1892, it was necessary to expand the railway track in order for the railway station to manage the ever-increasing stream of trains and passengers.

The late nineteenth century was a period of great visions. In 1898 an ambitious scheme of the overall reconstruction of the entire railway station was developed. The aim was not only to solve practical transport problems, but also to create an architectural jewel that would represent the prestige of the capital. It was this project that was built in 1901 that you admire today. Its construction lasted until 1909 and the author of this monumental work was a recognized architect Josef Fanta.

I now ask you to pay attention to the architecture itself. Look carefully at the front of the building. What you see is the largest Art Nouveau monument in the Czech Republic. The Art Nouveau was a style that sought beauty in organic shapes, in smooth lines and in detail that was meant to induce emotion. Josef Fanta has not been isolated from what has been happening in the world in creating this project. His main inspiration was the North Railway Station in Paris, which was the peak of European railway architecture at that time. Fanta wanted to transfer this spirit of the city and elegance to Prague.

Notice how the building works in space. Her style is typically Art Nouveau, which means she's trying to combine a practical function with an artistic trait. Although the building may seem a little closed today, it was a symbol of openness and modernity at the time of its creation. Look at the line of the roof and the rhythm of the windows, see how the whole building is inserted into the surroundings of Vinohrady. It is an architecture that was meant to create a sense of wonder and importance when the passenger first entered the city.

Speaking of personalities, there's the dominant name of Josef Fanta. He was a man who was able to combine the technical requirements of the railway with high artistic taste. Imagine how responsible he was when he designed a building to serve as the main gate to Prague. Fant's building wasn't just about walls and roofs, it was about organizing the movement of thousands of people. Originally there was all passenger handling, there were tickets bought, here were waiting for departure and here were the guests welcome. It was the heart of the entire station, a place full of heads, haste and expectations.

However, the history of the building has a sadder turn. In 1976, the building was legally registered among the cultural monuments, which confirmed its irreplaceable value. But only a year later, in 1977, something happened that fundamentally changed the fate of this place. A new hall was opened, which completely changed the flow of people's movements. This new structure has basically cut off Fant's building from the passengers' mainstream. A building that was created for life, for noise, and for people has suddenly become something like a silent spectator who stands aside and watches the modern world rolling on in order beside it. It became a periphery in the center, even though it remained in its entirety.

And now I want to impress you with one interesting thing that may not be visible at first sight, but it is very important. Fant's building is not only protected as a separate object. It is an integral part of the wider urban monument zone, which includes Vinohrady, Žižkov and Vršovice. This means that its value is not only in its walls, but in how it defines the character of this whole part of Prague. It is an anchor that connects different urban districts and reminds us of how the city evolved and how priorities have changed over the decades.

You may be wondering what state the building is in today. If you look at it carefully, you'll see traces of time. Since 2012, its extensive reconstruction has taken place. It is a slow and challenging process, because it is not possible to proceed hastily when working with such a valuable Art Nouveau monument. The goal is to restore the building's formal glory and reconnect it to the life of the city so that it is no longer just an isolated island, but again an active part of the main station. It's a way from forgetting back to meaning.

If you look at this structure for the last time, try to imagine the contrast. On the one hand you can see the representing silence and patience of reconstruction, on the other hand you can imagine the incredible rush of 1910, when there were people here in Art Nouveau dresses and suitcases who didn't know what a stormy century they were going to be. Fant's building is like a book in which the whole story of the Prague railway is written.

Thank you for accompanying me in this brief view of one of our countries' largest Art Nouveau pearls. I hope you found time to see the details and think about the people who built this building and who breathed life into it over the years. Now I invite you to look around in peace, perhaps take a photo of the facade and then continue your journey along the beautiful streets of Vinohrady or go further into the depths of the main station. I wish you a pleasant rest of the day and an inspiring exploration of our city. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring - After awakening the city, the fresh green oasis of Vinohrad is spread around Fant's building and the first sun rays reveal the newly revealed details of the facade, which is slowly shown to the public again after reconstruction. In this period it is pleasant to walk around the surrounding gardens and suck the smell of blooming trees. We recommend coming in late in the morning when the crowds are even smaller and the sun is not too sharp. A light jacket or sweater and comfortable shoes will provide a comfortable trip.

Summer - On hot days the station building becomes a shadow along wide alleys, where sunlight is reflected from glass parts and creates a game of lights and shadows. In the summer season, more tourists and locals appear around the station, taking advantage of the possibility of sitting in nearby cafés. The best time is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when temperatures are slightly reduced and the queues are shorter. Take your sunglasses, hat and plenty of water; light clothes or shorts are suitable, but remember also comfortable shoes for longer walking.

Autumn - Colored leaves in the Vinohrad parks give the building a romantic touch, while autumn sun rays soften the contrasts of historic windows. During this period visitors often walk slower to enjoy the atmosphere of changing colors. We recommend to come in the late afternoon when the light is softening and the crowds are scattered. A warmer sweater, a light jacket and solid shoes will help you handle cooler evening air and eventual rainy showers.

Winter - In winter time, especially in the advent period, the building is covered in fine lighting, which underlines architectural details and creates a cozy atmosphere in the middle of snowy streets. Opening hours may be shortened, so it is advisable to check the current information before visiting. The best is the morning when the crowds are the smallest and the sun still lights up the snow. Dress warm - thick coat, hat, gloves and waterproof shoes - so that the cold doesn't surprise you while walking on snowy sidewalks.
