Fara v Horní Cerekvi is an important Baroque building. Together with the Church of the Annunciation of the Lord, the square in Upper Cerekvi is dominated by Pelhřimov. The building has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 31 December 1963 and represents evidence of the development of the parish administration on the Czech Moravian border.

The history of the building is closely linked to the restoration of the church administration after the Thirty Years War. Between 1676 and 1677, when the parish records took place, the parish was in a woeful state. The period vision protocols of the Prague Archbishop from 1694 to 1710 state that the spiritual administrator occupied an ancient wooden structure. He described her as worse than a parrot who threatened to slide. He had to live in one room with his family. The fundamental change took place only at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries when a new brick rectory was built under the patronage of Count František Ferdinand of Kuenburg.

The construction of the new Baroque building was completed in 1708, as evidenced by the year carved on the vault of the entrance portal. The construction costs reached 1800 gold pieces. In addition to the residential building there was also a parish hospital for four people, school, stables and granary. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the object was further modified. For example, in 1797, 1801 and 1814, repairs were made to the entrance and shingles were replaced on the roof of the farm and granary.

On 6 May 1821 Horní Cerekev hit a malignant fire which seriously damaged the church, the workhouse and the rectory itself. The subsequent reconstruction was the result of the cooperation of Pastor P. Tadeas Jan Kottnauer and Count Kryštof Cavriani. While the clergyman committed himself to restoring the farm, Count Cavriani financed the repair of the parish house. The nobleman was involved in the reconstruction of most of the key buildings in the village, including both churches, school and town hall.

The present form of the rectory is a one-storey Baroque building with a arched portal above which is placed a large skyline. In 2010, the area underwent a significant change, when a walled passable barn was demolished due to emergency conditions and lack of maintenance. Only part of the granary was preserved from the original farm buildings, which today serves as a garage and shed. The parish belongs to the vicarage of the Czech-Budějovice diocese and has been managed by P. Mgr. Martin Brácha since July 2021.

Fara v Horní Cerekvi represents a valuable proof of Baroque architecture and the history of the parish administration, which in the past had to face many adversity. Visiting this place offers an opportunity to look into the history of the region and appreciate the importance of the protected buildings, which even after centuries form an unmistakable character of Czech cities.

Welcome to Upper Cervici, a small village full of history and beauty. You stand before the baroque glory, a parish that proudly plagues itself from the square along with the Church of the Annunciation of the Lord. Its elegant lines and carefully decorated facade attract you as a magnet. Let's dive into her rich history.

The rectory you see before you has roots dating back to the early 18th century. The original wooden structure no longer lasted time and was replaced by a new brick object. This important transition took place under the patronage of Count František Ferdinand of Kuenburg, who not only financed the construction but also inspired its completion in 1708. At that time the rectory was necessary for the spiritual administration of the village, although the original wooden building was in such a bad condition that the spiritual had to share space with the family. The new object brought more comfort and prestige.

Look up at the facade of the rectory and note its elegant architecture, which is characteristic of Baroque style. Although particular architectural creators are not known, their artistic skills are reflected in every detail. Fara with its harmonious design and carefully decorated elements is a real proof of baroque art. Also note how the rectory creates harmony with the neighbouring Church of the Annunciation of the Lord, thereby forming the dominant square.

The history of the rectory was not without obstacles. In 1821 the village hit a devastating fire that destroyed the rectory and required its restoration. This challenge was responded by Count Kryštof Cavriani, whose efforts were crucial to enable the rectory to return to its original great. His contribution today is seen in every stone of this historical monument.

Apart from the heroic story of restoration, the rectory has also become a home for some interesting personalities. František Ferdinand z Kuenburgu, Tadeáš Jan Kottnauer and Kryštof Cavriani are only three names associated with its history. Each of them contributed in a way to the spiritual and physical development of the village.

The interesting thing that may interest you is that although the rectory itself has undergone several transformations, its original condition was so problematic that the spiritual administrator had to share space with the family. This detail reflects dramatic changes in living conditions and architecture of the time.

Now that you have immersed yourself in the history of the rectory in the Upper Cervix, it is time to explore more. Take a look at the surrounding areas, take a moment to notice the everyday life that this monument has seen, and maybe you'll find something else that will interest you. Thank you for your examination and we hope you will return to exploring this beautiful place. With God on your travels!

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is in the morning during the working week when the square is quieter and the Baroque architecture of the rectory stands out in a soft morning light. You can avoid the excitement and see the facade details better.

If you use public transport, check the current connection in the national connection search engine.

For photography we recommend to use the wide-angle lens from the opposite side of the square, where you can capture the rectory together with the Church of the Annunciation of the Lord in one whole. The best lighting conditions for images are at a time when the sun illuminates the facade of the building.

In the vicinity we recommend visiting the nearby town of Originals or the town of Žirovice, which offer other historical attractions. For families with children, the trip is ideal thanks to undemanding terrain and the possibility of walking around the square, where there is enough room for movement.

Bring comfortable shoes for walking on historic tiles and a camera. The entry and exact times of the tours may change, so always check the official website before travelling.
