Fredevald, also called Pustý zámek, in German Fredewald or Wüstes Schloß, is a ruined castle in the Lužické hory mountains. It lies approximately three kilometers east of České Kamenice and its remains are protected as a cultural monument.
The castle was probably built by the Michalovice family in the second half of the fourteenth century. It rose on a massive rocky massif above the valley of the Kamenice river and was meant to protect a nearby trade route. The first written mention dates from fourteen hundred and six. At that time the castle belonged to Hynek Berk from Dubá and his captain Zikmund from Slibovic was stationed there.
In fourteen hundred and twenty-eight, Zikmund from Vartenberka purchased the castle along with the entire estate from Jindřích Berka. In the thirties of the fifteenth century, Mikeš Pancíř from Smojna repeatedly attacked the Lusatian towns from Fredevald. Other castle owners continued these raids. However, the Lusatian towns did not remain without response. Their armies repeatedly conquered the castle and in fourteen hundred and forty they destroyed it.
From the end of the fifteenth century the castle was abandoned. Its role was taken over by the new Kamenický hrad on Zámecký vrch. In the years from fifteen seventy to fifteen seventy-four, meadows near Fredevald still appear in the records of the town of Kamenice, but the castle itself was no longer mentioned.
