Above the place where the Mnichovka stream flows into the Sázava, on a rocky promontory at an altitude of about 275 meters, traces of a castle have been preserved, whose name we do not know. It is called Hrad u Čtyřkol after the village. It lies in the northern part of its cadastral area in the Benešov district, directly opposite the castle Zlenice. From the castle, earthworks, ditches and foundations of buildings remain. Since 1965 it has been protected as a cultural monument.
No written records have survived about its history. According to scarce archaeological finds, the castle existed only briefly, in the thirteenth century. Because of its ancient appearance, the scholar Tomáš Durdík considered a connection with transitional type castles. However, newer findings show that precise dating of individual structures is difficult because reliable supports are lacking.
The castle was apparently divided into two parts. Its outer ward was, however, damaged by the construction of a railway line and recreational cottages. A massive ditch with an earthwork separated the castle keep from the rest of the promontory. Behind the earthwork stood three buildings freely arranged on three terraces, which gradually descended. On the highest stood a building with a square ground plan, in the middle a rectangular building, possibly a two-part palace, and another building was at the lowest end of the keep. The sides of the promontory were perhaps protected only by wooden fencing, but evidence for it is lacking.
The remains of buildings with stone footings most likely belong to a residence from the thirteenth century, because they respect the terraced arrangement of the promontory.
