Hradiště Kokšín Hillfort
Hradiště Kokšín is an ancient archaeological site on the same-name hill at an altitude of 684 meters near the New Mitrovic district of Pilsen-South. The locality is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and illustrates the high settlement, which was probably created during the period of Halštat.
Few direct reports of the oldest history of the place have been preserved, as the area has not yet been examined in detail. The absence of a survey means that the exact dating remains unclear, although experts predict the emergence in the period of the Hallatians, i.e. the older iron age. This period was characterised in the European context by the formation of advanced companies with advanced metallurgy. The high mansions in the Czech countries then served as economic and power centers.
The architectural form of the fort formed a fortified area with a stone wall. It defined a space of oval or rectangular ground plan with dimensions approximately 160 times 90 meters. The total length of the perimeter of the fortifications exceeds 400 meters. Due to the lack of research, no further building phases or later reconstruction of the building were documented.
The most significant remains are the stone wall, the height of which is between 0.3 and 0.7 metres. It's best seen on the south side, where it's kept 80 meters long. In the immediate vicinity, iron ore has been mining in the past, as evidenced by the economic use of the landscape at the time.
The location is freely accessible and located near the village Mítov. The natural reserve of Kokšín is situated north of the castle, which complements the character of this place.
Hradiště Kokšín is an important document of prehistoric settlement. Despite the absence of detailed surveys, it offers insight into the history of our territory. The visit is an opportunity to know the archaeological heritage in the context of the nature reserve and historical mining activities.

Welcome, distinguished visitors, to the top of the Kokshin. Take a deep breath and look around you. You've just arrived at a place that carries thousands of years of silence and mystery. You stand at an altitude of six hundred and eighty-four meters, which makes this point a natural prospect, but in ancient times it was mainly a strategic position. Look at the landscape around you, the snorting trees and distant outlines of the village Nové Mitrovice. Imagine that by the time this space stood here in full glory, this peak was one of the key points in the area. What you see today as a quiet meadow with a few remains of stones was once home to people here looking for safety and insight over the surrounding terrain.
Let us now move together far further back in time before history began to be written in our books. Imagine the world over 2,000 years ago. It is assumed that this fort was built about seven hundred fifty BC. It was a time that experts called the Hallatians. At that time mankind began to use iron much more widely, which changed the way in which tools, weapons and objects were produced for everyday life. The people who built the fort here were not just random pilgrims, but a group that had a clear plan. They chose this very peak because the height provided the best possible protection. Those who came from a distance were seen in time, and those who tried to attack the castle had to cross the steep terrain, which weakened the attackers considerably.
Now pay attention to the space you are in. Although at first glance there may seem to be little left, if you look closely at the ground plan of the area, you will notice something interesting. The entire fortification was oval or rectangular. Its dimensions were approximately 150 meters in length and 90 meters in width. Try to encircle this line in spirit. Imagine how there were dwellings in this space, food warehouses, and possibly ritual places. The main element to focus on is the stone wall. Look under your feet or look around for remains of stone structures. This wall was once a massive barrier that separated the safe inner space from the wilderness and the enemy outside. It's not reaching its original height anymore, but it's still there. Its current height is between three and seven decimals of the meter. Even if it's just the low rest of the wall, it's tangible evidence of the existence of the people who lived here, working and guarding their borders.
When we think about the people who created this place, we have to admit that their names are forgotten. We have no record of kings, warlords or builders leaving their signatures. The architects of this castle are unknown, but their work speaks for them. Notice how accurately they had to choose a place and what hard work it was to bring so many stones to the top of the hill. Imagine the unknown men and women who stood up here in the morning fog, cooking food in the fire, watching the horizon. Maybe there was a big family, or rather a whole community, that was connected to a common goal of surviving in a harsh environment of ancient times. Even if we don't know their specific stories, we can feel their presence in every stone that is now the rest of the valleys.
And now we come to a part that is fascinating by its ambiguity. Hradiště Kokšín is surrounded by mystery. Although this place has been recognised as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since the twentieth century, this site has not yet been thoroughly investigated. This means that most of our knowledge is based on surface observation and assumptions. We don't know exactly what's hiding deep in the ground under your tracks. Maybe there are still ceramic containers, bronze jewelry or iron tools that would tell us a lot more about the everyday life of the people here.
Another big question remains the end of this settlement. It is assumed that the fort was abandoned or disappeared around the year four hundred fifty BC. Why did people choose to leave a place that was so well fortified and strategically located? Has there been any conflict, or has the climate changed that made it impossible to grow crops around here? And maybe it just moved the center of power elsewhere and Kokshin lost his meaning. This emptiness in our knowledge gives the place a special atmosphere. It's like an open book from which some pages have been ripped out, and we have to write the rest of the story ourselves using our imagination and respect for history.
Now, when you look around, feel the contrast between today's calm and the ancient activity that existed here. This peak was once loud, full of voices, sounds of animals and stone work. Today there is silence that only breaks the wind. But this silence is the best guide for anyone who wants to understand the spirit of this place.
I invite you to now walk quietly around the castle area. Try to follow the line of the stone wall and imagine what the whole fortification would look like at the time of its greatest glory. Note how the terrain changes and how naturally the fort fits into the landscape. Let yourself be silent and think about how many generations of people have gone through this place and how many have looked at the same horizon that you're looking at right now.
Thank you for spending some time with us at Kokšín Castle. We hope that this journey to the depths of time has caught your attention and that you are leaving with a sense of respect for the unknown builders of this place. We wish you a pleasant continuation in your discovery of the beauty of our landscape and goodbye.
Tips for visitors
The best time to visit is during late spring or early autumn, when the terrain is well viable and the forest path to the top is not muddy. In the summer months, the hill offers a pleasant shade under the trees. You can easily get to the location by car, which you can park in the village Nové Mitrovice. From here, it leads to the castle of the pedestrian route. Public transport can be used in the village, check the current connection in available search engines. We recommend fixed shoes suitable for the field and plenty of water because there are no refreshment stands on the site itself. The morning light is ideal for photography, which illuminates the forest area and highlights the terrain inequalities of the castle. For families with children the trip is suitable as a light nature walk. Since it is an archaeological site in the field, we advise children to explain that they move in a protected historical location where caution is needed.

Seasonal recommendations
In spring the castle comes alive with the first greenery and blooming flowers that gently cover the stone remains. The atmosphere is fresh and hopeful. We recommend moisture-resistant shoes because roads can be muddy after melting snow. The best place to visit is in the morning when the air is the cleanest.
The summer season brings sharp sun and dense shade of trees, creating a contrast between illuminated ruins and cold corners. Expect more visitors in the season, so come early in the morning. Don't forget light clothes and sun protection, so the heat doesn't get over you.
Autumn colours of leaves provide an archaeological site with melancholy tones and the castle looks very mysterious in orange light. It's the perfect time for quiet walks without big groups of people. Get ready with layered clothes and solid shoes to protect you from a damp background.
In winter, the ruins of Kokšín work strictly and their real contour is created without leaves. Freezing air and any layer of snow create a quiet, freezing atmosphere. Due to short days, plan to visit around noon. Hot shoes, gloves and hats are essential to keep you from getting cold.
