Swedish chances near Chloumek is a fortified settlement north of Chloumek, a part of the city of Dobrovice in the Mladoboleslavsk region. It lies at an altitude of 365 meters on a ridge that rises 100 to 120 meters above the surrounding landscape. Since 1967, the fortified settlement has been protected as a historical monument, and in 2000 its surroundings were declared a nature park. The area of the defunct fortified settlement is used for agriculture today.
The name is traditionally explained as indicating that a Swedish military camp may have been located here during the Thirty Years' War. However, the actual history of the place is much older. A more thorough archaeological investigation has not yet taken place, so we know it only from accidental finds. According to these, the site was used as early as the Eneolithic period. In the younger and late Bronze Age, a fortified settlement may have been established here, though its possible fortifications were later covered by structures from the fortified settlement period.
The substantial fortification that has survived was most likely built in the eighth century. It is extensive: the rampart with ditch spans forty meters in width, and from the top of the rampart to the bottom of the ditch it is eleven meters. The fortified settlement itself covers an area of four hectares. On the north side, it is adjoined by what is believed to be a subfortress. This is revealed by stepped terraces overgrown with forest and a rampart 400 meters long. In the middle of the fortified settlement is an elevated spot from which most of the finds have come. These were collected there among others in the nineteenth century by Josef Ladislav Píč.
The fortified settlement was probably abandoned already in the first half of the tenth century.
