Hryzely Hillfort
Hryzely are an early medieval castle located south of the village Hryzely near Barchovice in the district of Kolín. It is remarkable with its remains of three waves and moats that illustrate its important role in the history of our country. The fort existed in the eighth to ninth centuries and since 1965 it has been protected as a cultural monument.
The fort is situated on the river terrace above the left bank of the Expedition. It was protected by three partially parallel arched walls from which significant walls were preserved. The outer wall defines the total area of 26,66 hectares. It was probably created during two construction phases and during the second one it was stretched towards the south and east where it connected, like the inner walls, to the steep slope of the valley over which the fortification was missing. There's a ditch in front of every valley. Two gates entered the castle. The north gate is pliers with a middle wedge block, while the south gate has only one out-turned shoulder that protects the entrance space from the side.
The first research in the castle was conducted in 1850 by Count Sternberk of Zásmuk. The information available is only from the second half of the twentieth century, when he led smaller archaeological research on the castle. According to the results of the research, the site was inhabited in perhaps the eighth century, but the castle was built in the preserved extent only in the following century. Due to the similar character of the fortifications, it is assumed that its builders were inspired by the form of the castle Stará Kouřim. More precise dating and possible classification of the oldest Czech fortifications from the old fortifications would allow only a survey of fortifications.
Miloš Šolle expressed the hypothesis that the castle in the ninth century was a separate centre, but later at the time of the peak stage of Old Smoking only served to secure and protect the southern border of the smoke settlement area. He explored three residential objects at the castle. Two of them were housing pits, from which he obtained ceramic fractions, from which he assembled two containers. One probably comes from the older forage age, while the other made it possible to date unequivocally into the middle forage period. The third explored object was a deep cottage from the second half of the ninth century. It had a rectangular plan with dimensions of 2 × 4 metres and a depth of up to 70 centimetres. The walls could have been constructed with a shroud. On the east side there was a fireplace with dimensions of 120 × 125 centimetres. Most of the other findings concentrated in space near the fireplace. Fragments of ceramic vessels were found, two overlaid, a fraction of olive coral, bones of pigs and cows. The discovery of long human bones is likely related to the disappearance of the cabin.

Seasonal recommendations
Spring: In the spring season, Hryzely is revived by flowers and new leaves which flood the castle with a lively color. Sun rays illuminate rock structures beautifully, creating impressive photographic moments. In addition, more tourists may appear because of pleasant weather, so we recommend taking a drink and light lunch foods.
Summer: Summer is the most visited time at Hryzelych. Long days offer full sunlight, which highlights historical architectural elements of the castle. Although this is an ideal time to visit, you can meet with a large crowd of tourists, especially in the main summer months. We recommend you arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the peak of attendance. Don't forget the sun protection and plenty of water because temperatures can be considerable.
Autumn: In the autumn period, Hryzely offers a unique view with a more colorful leaf, which forms a beautiful background for the historic castle. Sunny days are ideal for visiting, while cooler evenings can bring milder weather and shorter opening times. In addition, it is possible that fewer tourists will appear this season than during the summer season, which means more peace of mind when walking through the castle. We recommend wearing top clothes and perhaps an umbrella because autumn can be sudden in the weather.
Winter: Winter season at Hryzelych offers a quieter atmosphere with fewer tourists and opportunities to explore the castle without noisy crowd. Sun lighting creates dramatic shadows that highlight rock structures, especially in quiet places such as narrow roads and high terraces. We recommend wearing warm clothes and protective shoes because winter can be very cold, especially at the higher levels of the castle.
