Jevín Fortress

Jevín is a extinct fortress located on the island near Yevinévsi in the district of Mělník, Středočeský kraj. This historical monument is probably from the beginning of the 15th century and is remarkable by its terrain relics of fortifications and buildings that are protected as a cultural monument. Although often incorrectly referred to as a chateau, its scope corresponds to the hard or smaller chateaux from that time.

The history of Jevína is almost completely covered by the fog of time. The written sources of its existence are indeed rare, which allows us only to speculate on the basis of archaeological findings. According to these research, the remains of the mansion dates from the thirteenth to 15th centuries. The oldest mention of the mansion in Yeviněvsi dates back to the 14th century, when part of the village belonged to Mareš the elder of Dědibab. His work included an almond sailing yard in which Pešík z Valovic was based in the 15th century.

There are several hypotheses related to the formation of Jevína. One possibility is that the fort could have been founded in the younger times of the chateau and died before the first written mention of Yeviněvsi in 1374. The second possibility is that the fortress was built by a religious or noble builder in the days before the Hussite wars and died soon afterwards. Jan ze Solan could be a possible builder, which part of Yeviněv bought from Mareš younger from Dědibab and died in 1415. The fortress would probably have died during the Hussite wars.

The Jevína architecture is characteristic of its time. The fort was based on a sharpness with an altitude of 258 metres and protected by a neck moat of 30 metres wide and eight metres deep. The narrower moat also lined the remaining sides, while on the outside there is a wall in front of it in the north. The south half of the hill was probably blazed at the same time as the wall. In the northern part they preserved the depths which are the remains of the buildings. The hill was probably lined by a stone wall. The main building was a tower building located on the northwest corner, supplemented by maybe another building on the east side.

The ownership of Jevín changed during its history. Starting with Mareš the Elder of Dědibab in the fourteenth century, Pešík z Valovic followed in the fifteenth century and the possible builder was Jan ze Solan, who lived here until 1415. The fortress probably disappeared during the Hussite wars.

Today Jevín is accessible by turning from the red-marked tourist route from Ctinévsi to Silent. Although only field relics are preserved, their protection as cultural monuments underlines the importance of this place to understand the rural noble culture of the fifteenth century. Visit Jevína offers a unique opportunity to explore the history and architecture of medieval chateaux, which played a key role in regional development.
