Jezuitská škola (Olomouc) Museum building
Jesuit School in Olomouci is a remarkable Baroque building of the Museum, located in the immediate vicinity of the Church of Our Lady of Snow. It is a significant monument that was built in the years 1701- 1708 in the construction of a university complex which the Jesuits in Olomouci gradually built at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.
This museum building is remarkable with its rich architectural features and artistic features. The rear two-storey wing of the building, which is perpendicular to the wall, creates two yards on the plot. The building was built in Baroque style, which was very popular in Europe at the time. The author of the project was Italian architect and construction engineer Giovanni Pietro Tencalla. The management of the construction was entrusted to Olomouc builder Adam Glöckel and was completed by his son Luke after his death in 1708. The author of the stonework, significantly finishing the monumental facade, was Olomouc stonemason Václav Render. The wall paintings, from which only small fragments were preserved in the hall and theatre hall, were carried out by Jan Kryštof Handke around 1735.
Teaching at the new school was launched in 1710. After the abolition of the Jesuit Order, the building has been used since 1773 c. k. The army took over the building in 1879. Under the name Old Artillery barracks, after the creation of Czechoslovakia Hussite barracks, worked until 1959, when the building was acquired into its administration by the National Museum in Olomouci as depository for his collections.
In the years 2005- 2008 there was extensive repair of the whole building for about CZK 120 million. A significant part of the costs were covered by the contribution from the EEA and Norway Funds. In 2013 the exhibition Stone Story was opened in the vaulted premises of the ground floor. It is accessible to visitors in the months of May-September.
