To understand why this column is standing right here, we need to go back deep into the past, into the dark years of the early eighteenth century. Imagine Moravia between 1714 and 1716. It was a time of uncertainty, fear, and great suffering when the plague hit this city and the whole area with relentless force. Death was ubiquitous and people were looking for a way to express their religious devotion and, above all, a thank you for finally coming back. It is this deep gratitude and desire to celebrate the Catholic faith that has become the cornerstone of this monument. The decision to build was made at a time when the city was still recovering from tragedy, so the column became a symbol of the victory of life over death.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself and to what you're seeing right in front of you right now. The whole work is the highlight of Central European Baroque. The construction was planned and implemented for a very long time, namely between 1716 and 1754. The main architect who processed this whole ambitious vision was Václav Render. If you look up now and look up, you will see what makes this column absolutely extraordinary. It is the highest sculpture in the Czech Republic. Feel the grandiousness that gold-plated copper sculptures emit, which is shined even in the changing light of day. The dominance of the whole is the Holy Trinity, which rises to heaven, and in its vicinity you can see the statue of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was an event so important that Empress Marie Terezie and her husband, Franco I, took part in it. Imagine the beauty, the presence of the monarch family and the pride the citizens of Olomouc felt when they saw their work finished and celebrated in such a society.

But the history of this column was not just about fame and celebration. We must remember that this monument had to face the destructive forces of war. In 1758, during the Prussian siege, the pillar became the target of attacks. The artillery balls that were meant to destroy this monumental work were involved in its structure. Yet the column resisted, stood and became a symbol of resistance not only for Olomouc but for the whole country. This ability to survive even in the darkest times of war gives this place an even deeper dimension.

Since 1995, this column has been recognised as a national cultural monument and in 2000 its importance was confirmed by being included in the World Heritage List.
