Jílkův mlýn, located on the Klabava River in the village Chrást near Pilsen, is a water mill built in 1839 and later rebuilt according to the design of architect Oldřich Starý. Since 2008 it has been protected as a real-estate cultural monument of the Czech Republic. This object is important not only by its history and architecture, but also by the dramatic events associated with its past.

The mill was originally built in 1839. In 1875 it was bought by miller Vojtěch Jílek from Božkov, who became a key character in the development of this building. His son Jaroslav rebuilt the mill in 1915 according to the design of architect Oldřich Starý and finished the Art Nouveau villa in 1920. This reconstruction meant not only modernization, but also artistic transformation of the mill, which began to reflect architectural trends of its time.

The architecture of the Mill is characteristic of Art Nouveau style. The mill and the old residential house are built, one-storey buildings that stand separately on the premises. In addition, the mill includes a granary, a power plant, an economic building and a villa with a large hall. The villa was designed to contain offices on the ground floor and the apartment of a miller on the floor. This comprehensive design reflected not only functionality, but also aesthetic demands of the time.

The history of the mill is also marked by dramatic events. During World War II, the miller's sons were involved in the resistance, which led to the arrest of the entire family and the subsequent establishment of the mill manager. On February 23, 1945, the son of Vlastimil was executed while Jaroslav was released from prison in May 1945, but already died of tuberculosis on May 19.

By 1930, the mill had a domestic power plant and Francis' turbine with an oiling capacity of 1 m ³ / s, a drop of 1,216 metres and a power output of 12,15 HP. The water was guided to the water wheel from a drive-away, located 75 metres below the mouth of the Hamru drain and is approximately 200 metres long.

In 2002, the flood tore down the barn and part of the shed. Since 2006 the mill has been renovated, which aims to preserve its historical value and prepare it for future visitors.

Today Jílkův mlýn is not only a monument to architecture, but also a witness to the rich history of the region. Its importance lies in a combination of technical innovation and artistic rendition which reflect the industrial development of the 19th century and the architectural Art Nouveau of the beginning of the 20th century. For visitors it offers not only a view of history, but also an opportunity to explore a unique complex, which is proof of a wise combination of techniques and art.

Jílkův mlýn is worth visiting not only as a monument, but also as a place where history and the present meet. Its preservation and reconstruction ensure that future generations can appreciate its importance and beauty.

Welcome to Chrást, where time seems to be stopped for a while and where the water of the Klabava River tells stories from the past. You are standing in front of the Mill of Jílková, a construction that is much more than just a former place grinding grain. It's a witness to the transformation of time, family fates and architectural taste. Stop for a moment, take a deep breath and feel the atmosphere of this place. In front of you, there is a building that, in its form, combines the practical function of a water mill with aesthetic tenderness, which one may not often encounter in such an environment.

Let's go back in time together for almost two years. The mill in this form began its existence in 1839. At that time, the water mills were the heart of every village and neighborhood. Imagine the constant noise of running water, the rhythmic beating of the mill wheel and the smell of freshly ground flour that was spreading through the air. The mill was at that time primarily a working space, a machine driven by nature, which served the entire community. It was an era where a man lived in a close relationship with the river and its moods. The clam that drives the mill was and is a key element of this whole. Without its strength, this building would have been a silent vessel, but thanks to water it gained life and meaning.

Now look carefully at the building itself. Note that the mill does not just act as a simple economic object. That's due to a big change that came a little later. In 1915 the mill underwent a major reconstruction. Author of this new look was architect Oldřich Starý. It was he who brought the Art Nouveau elements into this practical building. Art Nouveau was a style that sought beauty in natural lines, elegance and departure from the harsh rules of the past. Today, when you're looking at the facade and the overall composition of the building, look for these very tracks. Notice how the function of the mill intersects with the aesthetic intention of the architect. It is fascinating to think that at a time when the world was about to make great changes, there was a project that was meant to bring to the countryside a sense of modern urban style and softness. This combination of industrial purpose and artistic feeling makes the mill a unique monument in the Pilsen region.

When you're standing in front of a building, feel the human destinies that are inseparably linked to this place. The mill has the name of the Jelková family, who lived and worked here for generations. Names like Vojtěch Jílek, Jaroslav Jílek or Vlastimil Jílek are not only records in historical books, but symbols of continuity and hard work. For the miller family, the mill was not only a source of livelihood, but a home and center of their world. Imagine their daily routine, their morning wake up to the sound of water and the responsibility they had for the quality of the flour that fed people around.

However, the history of this place is not just about calmly grinding grain and architectural details. The mill also holds darker and dramatic memories that lead us to World War II. It is at this time that the fate of the Jelková family has changed sharply. The sons of the miller, driven by a desire for freedom and justice, were involved in the resistance against the Nazi occupation. It was a bold decision that was at great risk at the time. But the struggle for freedom had a high price. The activities of the miller's sons were exposed, which led to the arrest of the entire family. Imagine the sudden break in life when a safe home and a quiet rhythm of the mill turned into fear and uncertainty. This tragedy gives the mill depth, which you cannot see at first sight. The building is therefore not only a monument to architecture, but also a silent monument to the courage and dedication of people who refused to remain silent in a time of darkness.

Now let's go back to the present. You may be wondering why this building is so important today. Since 2008 the mill has been protected as a real-estate cultural monument of the Czech Republic. This means that the State recognised its irreplaceable value not only from the point of view of the technical heritage of the water economy, but mainly from the point of view of architectural and historical importance. It is a recognition that the combination of the original 1839 and the 1915 Art Nouveau Art Nouveau are a whole that is valuable to us today. It is a reminder of a time when even in small villages the quality of design was taken care of and when family traditions intertwined with the great history of the nation.

Now when you look around you, feel the contrast between the constant movement of water in the Klabava river and the stillness of the stone walls of the mill. The water still flows in the same direction as it flowed during the miller Vojtěv, Jaroslav and Vlastimil. Only us visitors are different. The mill reminds us that everything changes, but some things remain. The beautiful line of the Art Nouveau design of Oldřich Old remains, the memory of the courage of the resistance remains and the quiet noise of the river remains.

I suggest you now slowly go around the building and observe from different angles how light reflects off its walls. Try to imagine what the mill looked like in 1915 when it was remodeled and shone with its modern period beauty. Feel how work, art and pain intersect in this place. The mill is like an open book where each layer of plaster and each stone tells a different chapter.

Imagine what secrets these walls can still hide. Who went through all of them, what they talked about in the mill and what dreams people had here. You may have noticed that the mill is very harmonious in its surroundings. This is not a coincidence, but the result of the symbiosis of man and nature that was the basis of existence at the time.

Now that you know the story of the Mill Mill, I suggest you continue to explore the Chrást area. Let yourself be guided by the Klabava stream and look for other traces of history that remain in this landscape. The mill has shown you that even in a small building a great story about the love of craft, the sense of beauty and unwavering courage can fit.

Thank you for letting me accompany you to this beautiful monument. I hope that the visit to the Mill has brought you not only new knowledge, but also a moment of reflection on how important it is to protect our common heritage. I wish you a pleasant further journey and many other fascinating discoveries. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the Mill is in the spring or autumn season when vegetation is in full strength and temperature is pleasant. These months also offer beautiful lighting conditions for photography, especially in the morning or late afternoon.

We recommend to use public transport or park on nearby roads and walk, which is also a healthy opportunity to explore the surrounding natural beauty. You can verify the current connection in the search engine.

When visiting, make sure you have protective clothes and shoes suitable for walking on mountain trails. The mill is located in a natural environment, so you may need sun or rain protection.

It is recommended to visit the site at the beginning or end of the day when light is softer and shadow effects add depth to your pictures. The best views are often located close to the Klabava River.

There are not many other historical monuments in the vicinity of the Mill, but beautiful nature offers opportunities for relaxation and a view of the landscape. If you have time, take a walk along the surrounding trails and enjoy a quiet environment.

Today it is accessible to visitors who want to learn more about the history of industry and mill processing techniques.

2. Church of St. Lawrence (Catholic Church) After visiting the Mílová mill, take a short walk to the local church of St. Vavríce, which stands in the centre of the village Chrást. This church is famous for its historical architecture and provides visitors with a view of the rich spiritual tradition of the local community.

3. Municipal Office (historical buildings) Continue the tour of the village Chrást by visiting historical buildings that once served as municipal offices. Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surroundings of the mill awaken to life, accompanied by a fresh green color of leaves and bird singing. The atmosphere is full of expectations, and the level of the stream can be very lively thanks to spring rains. We recommend choosing practical shoes suitable for wet terrain and laminated clothing. It's the perfect time for a quieter tour before the season starts.

The summer season offers the most sun clock and warm light, which beautifully highlights the details of the ongoing reconstruction. In the main summer season there are more people at the monument, so it is best to arrive early in the morning to enjoy the peace and avoid the greatest heat. Don't forget the sun protection, the hat and enough drinking water.

Autumn brings to the landscape around Chrást melancholic beauty, leaf colours and often fog rising above the water level. Light is low and soft in this period, which creates a magical atmosphere. Prepare a waterproof jacket and warmer clothing, because the water stream is colder. The best time to visit is afternoon hours.

In winter the mill is very raw and the silence in the area is almost uninterrupted. If snow falls, the monument looks very fragile and picturesque. Due to short days and cold, we recommend planning a visit around noon. The need is very warm clothes and solid shoes, because the surrounding roads can be slippery.
