Jindřišská věž in Prague in New Town is the original Gothic bell tower of St. Henry and St. Kunhuta. With a height of 65.7 metres, it ranks among the highest free-standing bell tower in the capital. The sandstone building has undergone many war damage, natural disasters and reconstruction over the centuries. Today it serves as a multi-functional object with a restaurant, view and bell game.

This monument was built between 1472 and 1476 in the Gothic style of sandstone. Originally, it had a wooden roof with shale cover. During the construction period in the fifteenth century, the Czech Kingdom was located in the period after the Hussite wars and King Vladislav II sat on the throne. Jagellonian. At that time, the tower and the surrounding lands belonged to the property of the Order of the Crossroads with a red star.

The construction features a Gothic style and sandstone meeting. In 1577 she received a clock whose dial decorated on the sides the colorful characters of the Old and New Town and the countries of the Czech Crown. In the years 1876 to 1879, a thorough reconstruction of the tower was carried out according to the design of architect Josef Mocker, after which it reached 65.7 metres. Later modifications took place in the 1970s and 2001, when new floors and elevators were built into the bowels.

Historically, it belonged to the Crossroads with a red star. He currently owns the Archbishop's house. In 2022 this decided to put the tower for sale for the price of CZK 75 million, which was approved by the Vatican. The sale criticised the management of Prague, representatives of the public, believers and parishioners from the church of St. Henry and Saint Kunhuta by writing a petition. The Prague management was originally supposed to buy the tower for CZK 100 million, but eventually it withdrew from the plan because of the high price and long lease agreement of the current tenant. This is a private company Jindřišská věž s.r.o., which runs a restaurant, view and bell game.

During its history, the tower faced many crisis moments. In 1648, at the time of the siege of Prague, she served as a military guard and was defeated by Swedish artillery. Another artillery damage was sustained in 1757 after the battle at Srbohol, when Prussian troops besieged Prague. In 1801, her thin gothic roof did not withstand a violent storm. Among the most important things are the bells here. The oldest is the 1518 Maria bell with a weight of 723 kg, written by the bell master Bartholomew. The biggest bell is Henry from 1680, spilled in 1804, with an impressive weight of 3350 kg. Dominik's last bell weighs 1,000 kg and was overlaid by Bellmann in 1850.

Currently (2024) this historical monument serves as an accessible object in close proximity to the tram stop of Prague Integrated Transport Jindřišská, Senovážné Square and St. Henry's Church and St. Kunhuta. A view of the city centre was built on the 10th floor of the tower.

Jindřišská věž represents a valuable example of historical architecture, which, despite war hardships and natural disasters, has preserved its unique bells and building character. Come personally to visit this remarkable Prague bell tower and see the city centre from its view on the 10th floor.

Welcome to the heart of Prague, the part called New Town. Stop for a moment, take a deep breath, and now slowly raise your eyes upwards. You're standing in front of one of the most prominent vertical points in this city, in front of the Henry Tower. The first impression you're likely to think of is a sense of its monumentality and stability. This building stands before you to a height of sixty-five and seven tenths of a metre, making it the tallest loose bell tower in the capital. Feel the strange atmosphere of a place where the daily rush of the modern metropolis collides with the silent testimony of centuries of history. It's a fascinating feeling when you're standing at the heel of a building this high and you realize how many generations of people were looking in the same direction towards the sky.

Let us now move back many centuries in spirit, by the end of the fifteenth century, namely four hundred seventy-two. It was this year that the construction of this Gothic bell tower began. At that time she served as a bell tower for the church of St. Henry and St. Kunhuta. Imagine the Prague of that time, its expanding New Town and the need to build a building that would be seen from a great distance and whose bells would call the faithful to prayer. The tower was built in the years four hundred seventy-two to ten four hundred seventy-six, which was a short but intense process of erecting this sandbox. At that time, the Gothic style that we still feel in the foundation and structure of the tower was a symbol of spiritual takeoff and technical progress.

Now pay attention to the material itself and the appearance of the building. If you look carefully at the surface, you will see the sandstone from which the entire tower is built. This stone gives the construction its characteristic shade and a sense of natural potency with the landscape. Notice the vertical lines that lead you up from the bottom and highlight the height of the structure. However, the architecture of the tower is not just a product of one period. She's been through a lot of changes over the centuries. In the year one thousand eight hundred seventy-nine, a major neo-Gothic reconstruction was completed. This project was led by the renowned architect Josef Mocker, who was known for his efforts to clean historical buildings and return their idealized medieval form to them. It's his work that makes the tower look the way you see it today. Mocker put his precision and taste into the building, connecting the original Gothic core with the 19th century aesthetics.

If you continue to examine the facade, focus your attention on the top of the tower where the clock is located. These clocks are one of the most valuable details of the whole monument. They were set in the tower by the year five hundred seventy-seven. Imagine that they have been measuring time for the people of Prague for more than 400 years. But the clock is not just a tool for watching hours and minutes. Look at their dial. He is decorated with colorful characters that have deep symbolic meaning. On the sides of the dial you will find the characters of the Old and New Town, but also the characters of the Czech Crown countries. These heraldic elements tell us the story of the power, administration and belonging of the territory which at that time formed the core of the Czech state. It's like a little historical map carved and painted right in the face of the tower.

But the life of this building was not just about beauty and peace. Jindřišská věž is also a symbol of resistance. Over the centuries, she had to face many trials. History recorded a series of war damage that left traces in the stone, as well as natural disasters that threatened the stability of the entire building. However, each such wound was subsequently healed by reconstruction. This ability to survive and rise again from debris gives the tower some depth. It is not just a dead stone, but a living organism that breathes the history of Prague, its take-offs and falls.

The interesting thing that may surprise you is how this historic building managed to adapt to modern times. Although her basic face remained true to the past, in the year two thousand one there was a fundamental internal change. New floors were built into the interior and an elevator was installed. It is a fascinating contrast that in the Gothic belfry of the 15th century, we can today use modern technology that allows us to easily cross tens of meters of height. This change opened the tower in a new way and allowed more people to experience an experience from a height that was once reserved for only a few chosen.

Now, if you look at the whole building again, try to imagine how many stories happened in its shadow. How many people walked past her walls, how many times did her bells ring in joy and sorrow. Jindřišská věž stands as a silent witness who saw the emergence and bloom of New Town and survived all the storms of history. Its height is not only a matter of meters, but it is the height of experience and time.

Now that you know her story, her architectural details and the secrets hidden in the clock dial, we invite you to further explore. You can try to find all the colored characters on the clock, or just stop for a while and perceive the calm that this building radiates in the middle of urban activity. If you have the option, we recommend to perceive the surroundings that are closely related to the tower.

Thank you for spending a moment with us at this wonderful monument. We hope this short trip over time has helped you better understand the importance of the Henry Tower. We wish you a pleasant further continuation of your trip Prague, full of new discoveries and inspiration. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit Henry Tower is an early afternoon when the sun lights up the city roof and the bell tower is projected into the surrounding buildings. This moment is ideal for photography as light brings dramatic shadows and colors.

For transport to the place visit the Senovaný Square by car or public transport.

When you visit, remember warm clothes, especially when you visit in winter. The tower offers views from the outside, so it is good to have a protective coat and high-quality shoes.

Photography from around the Jindřiš Tower offers several interesting perspectives. The best places are in Senovážné Square, where you can capture a general view of the church of St. Henry and St. Kunhuta along with the tower.
