Jurkovičův dům, located in Luhačovice, is a spa hotel built on the site of an older classical building. The architect Dušan Jurkovič rebuilt the building between 1901 and 1902 into a two-story building in the style of folk Art Nouveau, making it an important cultural monument. This monument is an important example of the modern architecture of the beginning of the 20th century and takes a key place in the development of Czech construction.

The history of Jurkovic House dates back to 1581, when healing springs around Luhačovice were first described. These springs led Count Vincent Serényi to build an inn and bath cabins near the springs. However, the facility soon ceased to comply, which led Jan Nepomuk Serenyi to build a classicist single-storey house in 1822. This house was later increased by a floor and in the years 1901- 1902 it was rebuilt by Dusan Jurkovic into a two-storey building in the style of folk Art Nouveau.

The architecture of Jurkovic House is characterized by the combination of wooden architectural elements inspired by folk architecture with modern elements, as evidenced by the entrance two-storey staircase hall. The original building was increased by one floor with an attic and thus formed an unglued building with four wings. In the polygonal tower there is a commemorative plaque with the relief of Dr. Palk Blaha, a healer physically and mentally disabled. The central area of the building (skylight) is glazed and serves to illuminate the indoor areas of the spa house.

The property history of Jurkovic's house begins with his status as John's house, which was renamed Jurkovičův dům in 1947. General reconstruction of the building took place between 2000 and 2002, while the function of the spa house was preserved.

Jurkovičův dům is today not only a cultural monument, but also an active spa hotel with 80 beds in rooms equipped with period furniture. A swimming pool, sauna and restaurant for hotel guests were established during the reconstruction. A natural carbon bath is available in a stylishly furnished spa cabin with brass bath.

The visit to Jurkovic House offers a unique view of the history and architecture of the early 20th century in Bohemia. This monument is not only an important cultural value, but also a living witness to the past worth exploring.

Jurkovičův dům represents the connection of folk architecture with Art Nouveau into the folk form of this construction style. Architect Dušan Jurkovič enriched the object with modern elements, which is evidenced by the entrance two-storey staircase hall. Due to these characteristics he was included in the List of Cultural Monuments in 1958.

Welcome to Luhačovice, a place where nature engages itself with healing power of springs and where every corner of the street tells its own story. Right now, you're standing in front of one of the largest buildings in the city. Stop for a moment, take a deep breath and just feel the space around you. The Jurkovičův dům stands before you. It is a building that at first sight seems very harmonious and natural, as if it had grown with the surrounding landscape a long time ago. Look at its overall form. You see in front of you a two-story building that serves as a spa hotel. It's a place where you get to relax with high art.

If you're watching this building today, maybe it's hard to imagine it once looked completely different. In the place where you are now standing, the older building was originally in the spirit of classicism. It was the so-called John house. Classicism was the style of strict, symmetrical and in many to ragged. But at the turn of the century, it was time to change. The time has come for architecture in Luhačovice to become more than a functional cover for people to become an expression of identity and beauty. And this is where the man whose name you now carry in the name of this monument enters history. We're talking about Dusan Jurkovic.

Let's go back to the year one thousand nine hundred and one. It was this year that a major reconstruction began. Architect Dušan Jurkovič was given the task of turning the old John house into something new, modern and deeply rooted in tradition. The work lasted two years, until the year one thousand nine hundred and two. Imagine the atmosphere when the old walls of the Classicist building began to change under the hands of a master who wanted to bring the spirit of humanity into architecture. Jurkovic wasn't just a builder, he was a visionary. He wanted the buildings in the spa town to reflect local character and correspond to modern taste.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself. What you see in front of you is one of the most important examples of style that we call folk Art Nouveau. Try to analyze this combination of words. The Art Nouveau was a fashion trend throughout Europe at that time, bringing to the art a smooth line, organic shapes and an effort for overall aesthetics. The popular component then means that Jurkovic has mixed into this modern stream elements of traditional construction which he knew from the countryside, folk cottages and cabins. The result is this unique two-storey building.

Look at the front of the house. Feel the modern approach to space mixed in with the delicate perception of the world. Notice how the building works in space. It's not just a massive block of concrete or stone, but it's more like a carefully assembled piece that has its rhythm. It is this combination of modernity of the early twentieth century and folk influence that makes the house an important example of the architecture at the time. It is a building that carries the desire to return to nature and roots, which is absolutely ideal in the context of a spa town where people seek health and peace.

Speaking of personalities, we can't forget Dusan Jurkovic himself. He was a man who could see beauty in the details that others ignored. His work in Luhačovice changed the face of the whole town. Jurkovičův dům is not just one of many hotels, it is a manifesto of his artistic beliefs. It is fascinating to think that this building has survived decades of history, war, and regime change, and still stands as a testament to the courage to create something unique.

An interesting detail in the history of the building is its appointment. Although it was rebuilt at the beginning of the century, the house bears its current name Jurkovičův dům only from the year one thousand nine hundred forty-seven. Before this, it was seen primarily as a functional part of the spa infrastructure, but over time, people and experts realized the great value of this building. The renaming was a recognition of his genius and influence on the overall appearance of Luhačovice. This act has definitely made the building a cultural monument that we admire today.

Now try to look at the building as a whole again. Imagine the first guests arriving here over a century ago. They entered the hotel, which was the peak of modernity at that time, and yet they felt cozy, at home. That's the mysterious power of the folk Art Nouveau. It can be luxurious and at the same time modest, modern and traditional. It's an architecture that doesn't appeal, but seduces.

When you stand before this monument today, you don't just see the walls and the roof. You see the result of deep thinking about what architecture should look like, which is consistent with man and his surroundings. Jurkovičův dům reminds us that the best modernity is one that does not forget its past. It's a bridge between the old world of classicism and the new world of the twentieth century.

Now that you know the story of this building, I suggest you observe it quietly for a while. Notice how light hits her, how her shapes change according to the angle you're looking from. It's a building that requires a little attention from every visitor to reveal its beauty.

Let's slowly say goodbye to this particular place. I hope you've found a way to understand why this house is so special. It's more than just a hotel, it's a piece of history that we can touch and see. Luhačovice has many other secrets and beautiful places waiting for your discovery. I invite you to continue to explore the surroundings, to perceive the atmosphere of these spa streets and to be inspired by the genius of Dusan Jurkoviča, which is felt every step of the way in this city.

I wish you a pleasant continuation of your journey and enjoy every moment you spend in this magical place. Goodbye.
