The Chapel of the Born of St. John the Baptist is located in the forest on the southwest side of Mount Plešivec near the village Kamýk in the Litoměřice district. The memorial protected area not only takes the chapel itself, but also the remains of an outdoor pulpit, which was once necessary for extending the service to the open space. The name of the chapel, referring to the birth of St. John the Baptist (not just the memory of the saint), is also specified in the catalogue of the lithomeric diocese.

The history of the place goes deeper than it seems. The original chapel was allegedly located in the same place since 1551 - a construction of the twin-boat type to which William Kamýcký of Kamýka was to be buried. His tombstone is today located in St. Nicholas' Church in the Great Jest. During the Thirty Years' War, especially in the Swedish campaign in 1640, the original building was badly damaged. The new era begins in 1660, when the locality was chosen by the Margrave of Baden Sylvia Kateřina, from the Italian genus Carretto-Millesim and the owner of the Lovosite-Kamýk. She built a new, six-sided central temple here.

The chapel became the center of an intense pilgrimage tradition. Believers were leaving Lovosic, where their journey began at the parish church at 6:00 in the morning. When the number of pilgrims grew, the chapel itself was not enough - people listened to the sermon from the outdoor pulpit near the northwest corner of the building. The interesting thing is that the tradition of bilingual sermons was maintained here until deep into the 19th century, given the language composition of the region: Lovosice on the left bank of the Elbe remained mostly Czech, while the right bank was German speaking. In 1777, the chapel underwent a repair, reminiscent of the years on the remains of the pulpit. The pilgrims were also overcome by the Josephine reforms and the division of the estate among several owners.

The chapel is architecturally characterized by Italian elements, although we do not know the author of the project. The floor plan consists of a regular hexagon with two rows of windows - the lower one is rectangular, the upper one is round. The building is crowned by a high cupola roof with lantern. The interior hides a six-dimensional dome and a late Baroque altar, which originally contained two statues. The stone pulpit fragments with polygonal ground plan, decorated with four relief features of the Renaissance and Baroque style, were preserved in the northern nарia.

The modern history of the chapel is both sad and hopeful. The pilgrims stopped in 1938 after the establishment of the state border, after World War II they only recovered in 1989. The construction gradually became desolate, the exterior pulpit completely destroyed - only a six-sided basalt column with scattered fragments remained. The chapel was repaired after 1990 and the pilgrimage tradition restored by the City Dean of Litomeric Charles Havelka. The new altar painting of St. John the Baptist comes from the lithomeric painter Arnold Richter. The pilgrims are still held around the ceremony on June 24. There is a community educational trail to the chapel.

The Chapel of the Birth of Saint John the Baptist stands in a forest on the southwestern slope of Plešivec Hill, not far from the village of Kamýk in the Litoměřice region. The heritage-protected area also includes the remains of an original outdoor pulpit.

According to tradition, an older, two-aisled chapel was built on this site in fifteen fifty-one. Vilém Kamýcký of Kamýk was supposedly buried in it, and his tombstone is now in the church of Saint Nicholas in Velkých Žernosekách. During the Thirty Years' War, when the Swedes marched through in sixteen forty, this chapel was severely damaged.

The present building was erected in sixteen sixty by Sylvia Catherine, Margravine of Baden, from the Italian Carretto-Millesimi family, owner of the Lovosice-Kamýk estate. This is why pilgrims regularly traveled here from Lovosice. The pilgrimage began at six o'clock in the morning with a service in the local parish church. These pilgrimages were popular, and the chapel apparently could not accommodate the crowds. So the pilgrims listened to sermons from the outdoor pulpit at the northwestern corner of the building.

In seventeen seventy-seven, the chapel underwent repairs. The pilgrimages survived the Josephine reforms and the division of the estate between two owners. It is remarkable that in this predominantly German-speaking area, preaching was bilingual all the way into the nineteenth century. This was connected with the fact that Lovosice on the left bank of the Elbe always had a Czech majority, while the right bank was almost exclusively German.

The pilgrimages ended with the creation of a new state border in nineteen thirty-eight, and after the Second World War they were not resumed on a larger scale until nineteen eighty-nine. The chapel fell into disrepair and the pulpit was destroyed. All that remained of it was a hexagonal basalt column and scattered fragments around it. Among these are fragments with four relief coats of arms and the dates sixteen sixty and seventeen seventy-seven. After nineteen ninety, the chapel was restored by Karel Havelka, the dean of the Litoměřice cathedral. He also revived the pilgrimages around the Feast of the Birth of Saint John the Baptist, that is around June twenty-fourth, and these are held to this day. Today, a municipal educational trail leads to the chapel.

The architect of the project is unknown, but the building bears Italian architectural elements. It has a regular hexagonal floor plan and two rows of windows—rectangular ones below and round ones above. It is topped with a high domed roof with a lantern. Inside is a six-part dome and a late Baroque altar. Following the restoration in the nineteen-nineties, a painting of Saint John the Baptist by the Litoměřice painter Arnold Richter was added to it.

The dedication specifically to the Birth of Saint John the Baptist is listed in the catalogue of the Litoměřice diocese. A possible explanation is that during the time of Josephinism, it was popular to dedicate buildings rather to events from the lives of Christ and the saints than to the saints themselves.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is from spring to autumn when the chapel is accessible and the forests are in flowers.

The location is also available by public transport, but we recommend to ride down in Lovosice and continue on foot.

Don't forget to bring water and food because there are no shops around the chapel.

You can photograph from all sides of the chapel, but the best are the views from the north side, where the chapel is lit by the sun. The best light is morning or evening.

We recommend to visit the nearby lookout tower on the Plešivec, from where is a beautiful view of Ústecký kraj.
