The Chapel of Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Hradek, Libochovany, is a late Baroque sacred monument near Porta Bohemica Canyon. Built on an old fortress, it stands as evidence of historical and architectural importance since 1759. This chapel attracts pilgrims, especially around July 2nd, thanks to rich history and a quiet environment.

Originally built by Ondřej Waldman in 1759 on stone foundations replacing wooden construction, the chapel reflects Czech Baroque styles during the Habsburg monarchy in the middle of the 18th century. This time highlighted religious architecture as part of Europe's broader trends, which is clear from the chapel's proposal.

Architecturally, it has an elongated shape with polygonal abscess and a bulking plate on the north facade. The interior is simple, with unglazed windows equipped with bars and flat ceiling. Initially, an altar painting with a 1758 chronogram was placed, although the actual interior details are limited.

The ownership and administration have contributed significantly over time, particularly during the restitution of the 1990's funded by the Brno Community. Key figures such as Ondřej Waldman, Jaroslav Sřež, František Sřež, among others played a crucial role in this effort and their names were mentioned on the walls of the chapel.

The site witnessed key events, including its construction and restoration. In 2011, the nearby Oracle was dedicated to St. Hubert, increasing the spiritual importance of the area. But the challenges of protecting ants have affected pilgrimage activities.

Today, the chapel remains in good condition despite vandalism, which led to partial devastation and modest repairs. It is accessible via the green tourist trail marked Stones - Big Jokes and near the Natural Reserve of Třeže (Three Cross). The chapel continues as an important pilgrimage place, especially around 2 July, where local communities maintain their traditions through annual events.

The Chapel of Visits of the Virgin Mary in Hradek offers a unique blend of historical and spiritual importance. Its permanent presence as a place of worship and reflection makes it a useful visit for those who explore the region's rich cultural heritage.

For kids

About 267 years ago, a wonderful adventure took place in a room called Chateau near Libochen! Where the chapel of Our Lady's Visitation now stands, there was once a wooden fortress. It was like a small chateau in the woods, but instead of horrible dragons and shields, there was a small temple building. To imagine what it was like: imagine you're in the Middle Ages and you're surrounded by forests and birds screaming.
