Vinohradská Chapel, or Vinohradská Chapel, is a Roman Catholic Chapel on Most Street in Chomutov. This structure of the Baroque style, which was built at the end of the 17th century, serves as a pitiful reminder of the 30-year impact of the war on the region. Built from funds obtained by the sale of the remains of two city councillors executed by Swedish soldiers, it is recognised as a cultural monument in Chomutov.

The origin of the chapel is deeply rooted in the turbulent time of the Thirty Years' War, which is characterized by repeated invasion of Swedish and imperial armies into Chomutova. Citizens faced heavy burdens, including securing occupation forces and providing substantial contributions. In 1645-1648, Swedish soldiers were executed by two city councilmen Michael Kreisiger and Schnabel after their release was asked for ransom, which the impoverished city could not afford. Their remains financed the construction of the chapel in 1697 or possibly in 1692.

Vinohradská The chapel has an architectural elongated plan and a richly detailed facade. The Segment Crown is crowned by the statue of the archangel Michael, which adds a significant element to the Baroque style. Originally, the statues of St. Joseph and St. John Nepomuk decorated the facade, but were lost after World War II. The cartouche above the entrance shows stockings and scissors, symbols representing the guilds of the councilmen.

In all history, the chapel has undergone significant changes. It collapsed in the second half of the 20th century. However, in 2015, the renewal efforts revised its structure and completed further interior repairs in 2017 to preserve its historical features. Originally accompanied by a statue of Pietà from 1725, this piece was moved to the cemetery in Upper Vsi in 1977.

Today, the Vinohrad Chapel is proof of resistance and memory. Visitors can explore its preserved interior, which contains the original altar, font and treasury. Its historical significance and architectural beauty make it a valuable destination for those interested in Chomutov's cultural heritage. The chapel offers insight into the past of the region and serves as a place of reflection on the lingering human spirit in the midst of adversity.

Welcome to the Vinohradská Chapel in Chomutov, also known as the Vinohradská Chapel. As you stand here on Most Street, take a moment to absorb the quiet atmosphere around this Roman Catholic chapel. Built at the end of the 17th century, his presence is proof of both history and faith.

The story behind this chapel begins in the stormy times of the Thirty Years' War. In 1645, two city councilman Michael Kreisiger and Schnabel were executed by Swedish soldiers. Their tragic fate led to an unexpected inheritance; their remains were sold to finance the construction of this chapel. This passionate act of despair reflects a time when survival often meant making difficult decisions.

As you look around, notice an elongated plan that defines its structure. The architecture of the chapel is modest, but dignified, inviting to reflect and think. Although specific architectural details are not fully documented, the atmosphere here speaks of its historical significance.

In the chapel are also stories of remarkable figures from Chomutov's past. Michael Kreisiger and Schnabel, whose lives ended so suddenly, left an indelible mark in this place. Their story is a strong reminder of the brutality of the era, but it also highlights the resilience of those who went after them.

An interesting aspect of this chapel is its original decoration. Once these figures are endowed with statues of St. Joseph and St. John Nepomuk, they are no longer present, which adds mysterious air to their history. Imagine what stories these lost statues could tell if they were still here today.

In 1725 a statue of Pietà was created for the chapel, which is to be moved in 1977 to the Upper Vsi cemetery. This piece adds another layer to the rich story of the chapel and makes it curious about its journey through time.

As you continue your Chomutov survey, consider visiting other historical monuments that intersect into this tapestry of history and culture. The Vinohrad Chapel is just one chapter in a larger story waiting to be discovered.
