The Chapel of Saint Anne in Vyskeř is an Empire-style sacred building situated atop a volcanic hill within the village, located in the Semily District of the Liberecký Region. Built in 1830 and recognized as a cultural monument since 1964, this chapel is notable for its historical importance and architectural features. It provides several distant views through forest clearings and includes three crosses and an artificial Golgotha cave carved into sandstone.

The origins of the Chapel of Saint Anne are rooted in legend. According to local lore, it was inspired by a miraculous apparition experienced by Ctibor’s daughter Anna during an attack on their castle at Mladějov. The tale recounts her escape with a servant through secret forest paths and guidance from a divine voice leading her to safety. In gratitude for this miraculous intervention, the chapel was erected in honor of Saint Anne, prompting the hill's name change from Viskeř to Vyskeř.

Architecturally, the chapel underwent significant reconstruction in 1830 after being donated by the Hrubá Skála estate to the local community in 1825. It features a single-nave design with an elongated octagonal plan and is topped by a gable roof, polygonal ends, a low sacristy tower, and a cross at its peak. This structure replaced an earlier chapel from the 15th century, reflecting both historical continuity and architectural evolution.

Ownership of the chapel transitioned to the village of Vyskeř in 1825 when it was donated by the Hrubá Skála estate. The local community took charge of its restoration in 1830, ensuring that the chapel retained its original foundation while adopting a new form. Between the World Wars, the chapel also served as a place for services conducted by the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, highlighting its role within the religious and cultural life of the region.

The chapel's surroundings have been shaped over time to enhance their natural beauty. In 1886, local residents planted trees around the hilltop under the guidance of schoolteacher Josef Koloce. This act limited some views but preserved others, creating a serene environment that complements the chapel’s spiritual ambiance. Today, visitors can follow a reconstructed pilgrimage path from the village to the site, enhancing its accessibility and appeal as a destination for those interested in history and nature.

Today, the Chapel of Saint Anne remains an important cultural monument, protected since 1964. Its historical significance, coupled with its architectural beauty and the legends surrounding it, make it a worthwhile visit for anyone exploring the Liberecký Region. The chapel not only offers insights into local history but also provides a tranquil setting for reflection amidst the scenic landscape of Vyskeř.

The Chapel of Saint Anna stands on a volcanic peak of the Vyskeř hill above the village of the same name in the Semilsko region. It is an Empire style building, protected as a cultural monument since 1964. Besides the chapel, there are three crosses on the peak and a Sepulchre of Christ, that is an artificial cave in basalt rock to the southwest of the chapel.

A legend is connected with the hill and the chapel, which also explains the unusual name of the village. It takes place in the years 1403 to 1458. On a manor house in nearby Mladějov there lived a beloved nobleman Ctibor with his daughter Anna. The manor was attacked by armed men of Otto from Bergov, a lord at Trosky. Anna managed to escape with a servant Matěj, who knew a secret path to the forests. But the girl got lost there. In desperation she heard a mysterious voice: "See the bush! My daughter, have hope!" When she looked up at the night sky, she saw a conical hill, on it a mighty bush and a bright figure, which showed her towards the midnight direction, that is towards the north. Anna went in that direction and reached a manor house of a gentleman, a friend of her father. He sent for reinforcements to Turnov, went out towards Mladějov and rescued the nobleman Ctibor. Anna did not forget the apparition and had a small chapel built on the peak, dedicated to her patroness, Saint Anna. The hill was then called Viskeř, later Vyskeř.

A pilgrimage chapel was supposed to stand there already in the 15th century. Another one was built in the 17th century by the Hrubá Skála nobility. In 1825 the village received it as a gift and in 1830 it was renewed on the original foundations. At that time the chapel acquired its present appearance. It is a brick single-nave building with an elongated octagonal ground plan, a hip roof, a multi-sided termination on both sides, a low sanctus belfry and a cross on top.

In 1886 local citizens at the urging of the headmaster Josef Koloc planted trees on the hill. Distant views were thus limited. Only a few paths remained, which point towards surrounding landmarks: Trosky, Ještěd and Bezděz. Between the world wars the chapel occasionally served for services of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. From the village a Stations of the Cross leads to the hill, renewed in the 21st century. The legend about the origin of the name is recalled by information boards at the parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the Chapel of Saint Anne in Vyskeř is during late spring or early autumn, when the weather is mild and pleasant for walking on the pilgrimage path leading up to the chapel. These seasons offer beautiful natural surroundings with lush greenery or vibrant fall colors, enhancing your experience as you approach the hilltop location. Additionally, visiting outside of peak summer months can help avoid larger crowds, allowing a more serene visit.

When visiting, consider bringing comfortable walking shoes as the path can be uneven, especially if you choose to walk up from the village. A light jacket is also recommended due to changing weather conditions at higher elevations. For those interested in photography or simply enjoying a picnic, don’t forget your camera and some snacks or water.

For photography enthusiasts, the chapel offers picturesque views against the backdrop of surrounding hills such as Trosky, Ještěd, and Bezděz. The best light for capturing these landscapes is during the golden hours—shortly after sunrise or before sunset—when the soft lighting enhances the natural beauty of the area. Exploring different angles along the path can also yield unique perspectives.

Within a 30-minute drive from Vyskeř, visitors can explore Trosky Castle, known for its stunning views and historical significance. Another nearby attraction is Ještěd Hill, which features an observation tower offering panoramic vistas of the region. These sites provide additional opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the area.

Families with children will find the pilgrimage path to the chapel a delightful experience, as it offers both physical activity and scenic views along the way. The hilltop location provides a sense of adventure for kids, while the surrounding nature makes it perfect for spontaneous games or exploration. Ensure that young children are well-prepared for the walk, perhaps by taking breaks at scenic spots.
