Kaplička (Kostelní Bříza) Niche chapel

The chapel of the Holy Cross in the highest place of the village Kostelní Bříza in Sokolov district is a Roman Catholic sacral object with a rich history. Since 1963 it has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and in 1988 it was registered in the state list of cultural monuments. The chapel is an architectural pearl and witnessed many historical changes and events.

The history of the chapel dates back to when Kostelní Bříza belonged to Julio Erdmann Antonín of Groppau. This nobleman was the owner from 1688 until his death in 1732 when he inherited the village Jan František z Turby. Between 1802 and 1805 the chapel served as a spare space for church ceremonies during the construction of a new church. This function underlines her spiritual and community role in the past.

Architecturally, the chapel is built from a mixed masonry where stone elements are dominated by brick parts. The construction is not oriented; It is characterized by massive corner pilasters and a profiled ledge. The original shingles roof was replaced between 2018 and 2023 by a burnt roofing of the type of bobnik. Renovation also included new plastering of external and internal walls, which helped to preserve historical form.

The ownership and administration of the chapel have undergone several changes. It was inherited by Julius Erdmann Antonín z Groppau after the Mulcov of Valdova in 1688, from a significant noble family. His heir was Jan František z Turby, which was in line with the practice of transferring property in the nobility. After World War II, Kostelní Bříza was incorporated into the military training area of the Spring and the chapel was neglected. The internal device was stolen and destroyed, leading to its gradual decline.

Key events in the history of the chapel include its original function of replacement space for ceremonies, subsequent abandonment and final renovation. Thanks to the intervention of the town of Břebová, an important reconstruction took place between 2018 and 2023, which saved this historic building for the next generation.

Today the chapel of the Holy Cross is a place where history and the present meet. The renovated condition allows visitors to appreciate its architectural beauty and historical significance. The building is surrounded by a group of five memorable Lips, known as Lips in the Church March, which gives the place a special charm.
