Klášterní Monastery

Klášterní street in Prachatice is one of the oldest urban roads. It was created when the city was founded as a link between the Great Square and the Upper Street. Historical maps of the second military mapping, which were completed in 1852, prove the existence of a passage in this place. The interesting thing is that there were originally more streets from the square. The tracks have been preserved so far - between No.47 and 48 you can see a dead end and between No.9 and 169 you can see a trail of another alley. However, only Klášterní street has been preserved from the entire original system, which makes it an exceptional part of the urban structure.

The street derives its name from the nearby monastery of the Congregation of the Merciful Sisters of St. Charles Boromei, founded in 1860. The records from 1894 show that in the German name there was an alley called Klostergässchen. When changing the language use, the original German name was retained, but in numerical form. Today you can easily enter the city office from the street.

Klášterní street is oriented in the eastern direction and serves as an important link between the Great Square and the intersection of the streets of Hradec, Na Sadí and Za Bashta. The entrance from the square leads through the narrow passage of the house No. 5, which had historically limited width and height - both of these houses together demonstrate the commercial importance and exhibition of Prachatic in the 16th century. After the passage, space opens with entries to Pub Za Radnice and Neumannee. On the left is the building of the town hall, on the right the wall with the yard and house no. 181. The street is intended for both walking and car transport, although there is no pavement.

The biggest attention in Klášterní Street deserves the house No. 181, originally the rear tract of the house No. 5. It has remained unused for decades - at least since 1972 - and is in very poor technical condition. It is the only unrepaired house in the historical center of Prachatic, which is a long-term problem for the city. Due to the state of emergency, which according to expert reports poses a serious risk to residents of neighboring houses and pedestrians in the street, Prachatice seeks a solution. At the public meeting of the council on 17 December 2018, the proposal to buy the house was unanimously approved by the city and subsequently corrected as the current owner does not have the resources necessary for the restaurant.
