Špalka's department store on Klicper Street in Hradec Králové is an important historical monument representing functionalism. At the beginning of the 20th century, the architect Vladimír Fultner built this three-storey building with apartments for the textile merchant Václav J. Špalek. The building is remarkable with its history, architecture and adaptability to current needs.

The story of the house begins in 1910, when the original building burned down in this place. Václav J. Spalek had a new project developed by Vladimir Fultner. The original proposal was criticised for disproportionate proportions, which led to its adjustment in 1911. The changes included removing some vertical elements and moving to a more horizontal facade, corresponding to the trends of moderate modern. After construction according to the modified project Fultner and Josef Jihlava, the house was used by Batia in the 1930s. In 1958, the building was declared a cultural monument, confirming its historical significance.

The architecture of the building is defined by a five-storey building with a symmetrical front facing to the square. The facade is decorated by the arch of the arches on the ground floor and three large windows on the second floor above which there are risalties with narrow windows on each floor. The roof with the Mansard, the skylights and two corner towers is complemented by a facade near Klicper Street. It has symmetrically located triangular bay risotto connected by balcony on the second floor. The whole look is characterized by the diamond square motif of the window structure.

The house has undergone several proprietary changes and dramatic events. In 2020, a complete reconstruction was carried out, which adapted the building to residential areas. However, this reconstruction caused disapproval of the monuments due to changes in the layout of the windows which affected the original character of the facade.

The interesting thing is that the house was primarily used for living, although it was marked as a business. While the ground floor and the first floor were intended for commercial purposes, the upper floor consisted of housing houses. This distribution is typical of Hradec Králové; purely commercial houses appeared here only in the 1970s.

Today Špalka's department store serves as a reminder of the architectural advances and historical changes of the city. Its adaptation shows how historical value can be maintained in the current standard of living. This architectural pearl Hradec Kralove is also a witness to the history of the city and offers a unique view of the development of modernism in the urban environment. For people interested in the history and culture of the region, this house is a necessary stop.

Welcome to the heart of Hradec Kralove. You're standing in front of a building that's much more than walls and windows. It is a silent witness to the changes that the city has seen in the last centuries, and at the same time a symbol of the ambitions of the people who once lived and worked here. In front of you is Spalka's department store on Klicperova Street. Before we go into his secrets, try to stop for a while, soak up the atmosphere of this place and see how this three-story object fits into the rhythm of the surrounding building. He may seem calm to you, but his history is full of discussions, changes, and constant search for the ideal shape.

Let us return together to the beginning of the twentieth century, namely 1911. Imagine a society back then, a time when ancient traditions began to intersect with a new, dynamic energy of modern age. It was at that time that a project was created, which was intended to serve not only as a business space but also as a residence. Václav J. Špalk, a successful textile trader, was the main mover of this whole building. As a man of trade and quality, he wanted to build a house that reflected his position and modern thinking of the times. To bring his vision back to life, he entrusted the task to the architects. The main author of the proposal was Vladimír Fultner, which later became one of the key figures of modern architecture in our region. However, his vision was combined with the work of Josef Jihlava, which led to some adjustment of the original intention.

Now pay attention to the construction itself and to what you see right in front of you. Look at the entire height of this three-story object. When you look at it, you can perceive its specific character. It's interesting that this house has not been accepted from the start by everyone with enthusiasm. He was often criticised at the time of his inception, particularly because of his proportions. At the time, people saw something in its shape that wasn't quite close to them. But it was this criticism that the architecture of the house evolved over time.

Notice how the house changed over the years. The original design was probably much more decorated, full of details that would fit the taste at the time. However, by successive adjustments, the house was getting rid of unnecessary ornaments and getting what is most today: a strong horizontal character. Instead of vertical decorating, your eyes can now move freely along lines that highlight the length and stability of the building. This shift from decoration to pure form is a fascinating example of how architecture approached the principles of functionalism. Even though the house was built before the greatest blossom of this direction, in his face are already signs visible. Funktionalism says that shape should follow function, and it is this house that has been found in it over time.

Although historical records of specific persons living on these floors do not directly mention their names, we can easily imagine them through the history of the building. Imagine Václav J. Špalka planning his business trips in these premises, monitoring the quality of new substances and how his textile empire grows. Imagine the families who settled here, their daily rituals, street meetings and views from windows around Hradec Králové. This house was not just static matter, it was a living organism that responded to the needs of its inhabitants.

There is one interesting thing that may surprise you. Although the house changed over the decades and its appearance transformed, its historical value was so high that it was already officially declared a cultural monument in 1958. This means that despite all changes and modernization, its essence remains protected as an untouchable piece of our city's history. And even in recent times, this object has not stopped in time. After extensive reconstruction, completed in 2020, the house regained a new life. But it no longer serves primarily as a department store, but as a modern living space. This ability to adapt - the ability to survive, to change its purpose and yet to retain its dignity - is what makes Klicper's four a real gem.

Look at him now as the link between the past and the present. It is a house that has learned to listen to critics who have learned to be less spectacular and more functional, and who has managed to adapt to the modern world without losing its history. It's a story about how a commercial project becomes a permanent member of urban memory.

I hope this short journey through time through the history of Spalkov's department store has helped you better understand his face. You're standing in front of a building that has its own soul and that still tells the story of finding beauty in simplicity and usefulness. Before you go further down the streets of Hradec Kralove, stop again, look at the detail of its lines and see how this object forms the unique character of the entire city. Thank you for sharing this story with us. We wish you a beautiful and inspiring walk through the rest of the city.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit Špalkova's department store is in the spring or autumn period when there are fewer people and nature around the monument offers a beautiful background. The sunny days are ideal for photography because the light highlights architectural details of the building.

Parking can be found in nearby streets, but due to the limited number of parking lots we recommend the use of public transport. The location is well accessible by bus and tram; the current connection can be found in the online route search engine.

When visiting, bring protective clothing if you plan to walk around the sights. Photographs are possible from considerable distances, so remember to bring a high-quality camera and possibly a long lens for detailed images.

For families with children it is advisable to visit nearby parks that offer space for playing. Children can enjoy their leisure and parents can enjoy their memory in peace.

In the surroundings you can visit the historical centre of Hradec Králové, where you can find other architectural pearls. For culturally interested visitors we also recommend looking at local museums.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring In the spring months, the building shines through a fine light, the facade is radiated by the soft sun and the surrounding area comes to life by the flowering greenery. The crowds of tourists are still thin, so it is ideal to come early in the morning. Get dressed in layers and carry a light raincoat - the weather is variable. The best time to visit is between 9:00 and 11:00, when the light is ideal for photography.

Summer Summer brings long days and intense sunlight that highlights the details of the Klicper house. The area around it is full of life, but also visitors, therefore it is advisable to arrive before 10 o'clock. Light, breathable clothes and plenty of water are recommended; in the evening it can be pleasantly cold. If you want to escape the greatest strain, choose the beginning of the week and visit in the evening, when light becomes less sharp.

Autumn The autumn season gives the place a dim light, which emphasizes the colorful leaves on the surrounding trees, and often a fine mist appears, which gives the place a mysterious atmosphere. Visiting is still higher than in winter, but manageable. Get dressed in layers, carry your jacket and umbrella - fog can bring light rain. The best time for a tour is in the middle of the week, early in the morning when the air is clean and the leaves are not too blown up yet.

Winter Winter moons make the building snow-covered and silenced, scattered by light, which creates a calm atmosphere. Spaces around may be less accessible due to shorter opening times and possible weather restrictions. Dress warm, wear layers and don't forget solid shoes with good traction. If the day is clear, noon offers the best contrast for photos; Otherwise, a short afternoon sun can be a pleasant addition.
