Kodský mlýn Water mill
Kodský mlýn is a former Renaissance water mill in the Koda settlement near Tetína in the Protected Landscape Area of the Czech Karst. The object is technically remarkable because it used an underground karst spring to drive. It allowed year-round operation without freezing the pond.
The construction took place between 1604 and 1611. The realization was authorized by Karlstejn Purcraby Vilém Slavata z Chlumu a Košumberka miller Tomáš Vavrovic. The creation of the building falls within the conclusion of the Rudolf II government, i.e. the period of peak Renaissance culture in Czech countries, when Europe was also preparing for religious and political conflicts towards a 30-year war.
Architecturally, it is a walled building corresponding to the rural type of mill from the beginning of the 17th century. The building consists of two basic parts: residential building and mills.
The operation of the mill was closely linked to the use of the Kodské vectorka. This underground karst spring has a constant temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, thanks to which water in the adjacent pond did not freeze in winter. This technical advantage allowed grain milling throughout the year. In addition to the founder of Tomáš Vavrovice and Purkrabi Wilhelm Slavata, the last miller Alois Karmazín is also one of the personalities associated with the history of the site. The operation of the mill was definitively completed in 1934.
Today the mill is located in the natural reserve of Koda in the heart of the Czech Karst. The location is accessible as part of a visit to the protected landscape area and offers insight into the history of rural milling in the region. Parking is limited, so we recommend to use the parking lot in the village Tetín and take the rest of the trip through a pleasant nature walk.
Take with you fixed shoes suitable for the field, plenty of fluids and snacks, because there is no service in the immediate vicinity of the monument. Remember the charged camera, since the picturesque ruins of the mill combined with the surrounding nature offer unique compositions.
