Cokořin extends approximately ten kilometres northeast of Mělníka above Pšovka in Doke hill. The castle was built - as expected - by Prague's Purgrave Hynek Berkou of Dubé in the period after 1320. Landscape in the surroundings borrowed the name Kokořín from the castle and belongs to a protected area.

The medieval castle faced a gradual decline. In 1426, Hussite troops conquered it, although some sources question this episode and claim that the real reason for the desolation was rather the unfortunate location of the building. During the 15th and 16th centuries, the owners took turns - among them were Jan Řitka z Bezdědic, gentlemen from Klinštejn, Beřkovští ze Šebířova and Kaplířové ze Sulevic. Since 1544, the castle has been registered as desolate. His fall was even deepened when Emperor Ferdinand II classified him among the so-called cursed castles - buildings which were not allowed to be repaired so that their advantage of location would not threaten the power of the government.

A major turn came in 1894 when Prague's businessman Václav Špaček bought the ruins. His son Jan had it remodeled before World War I. Revitalization continued under the guidance of architect Eduard Sochor from 1911 to 1916 in accordance with the instructions of historians Augusta Sedláček and Čeňek Zíbrt. The palace was raised by one floor and newly covered.

The castle is dominated by a cylindrical observation tower 38 metres high. On the corner of the palace is a sculpture of Jarmila Špačková by sculptor Josef Kalvoda, interior decorated with paintings of Julius Fischer. The exhibition also contains a monument dedicated to the poet K. H. Mách and a collection of Czech romantic art from the 19th century.

The castle underwent a turbulent modern history: in 1951 it was nationalized, in 2001 it was declared a national cultural monument and in 2006 it was returned to the family of Spacek.

Cokořín is attainable by bus line Mšeno-Mělník; There's no train connection. There is a Kokořín tunnel under the castle. Since the 18th century it has been the goal of walking on marked roads, in 2015 it was visited by over 39,000 people. In Prague it reminds the castle of Kokořská Street in the north of the city.

Welcome to Kokořín, one of the most famous historical monuments in the heart of the Czech Republic. You are standing right outside the castle, which is known for its iconic cylindrical tower, built on a steep rock cliff above the Kokořín Mine. The view here is extremely impressive and you immediately feel the spirit of past centuries that this structure has survived.

Castle Kokorín was probably built after 1320 by Prague's Purgrave Hynek Berk of Dubé. This castle complex served not only as a defensive fortress, but also as an important seat of power and administration in the Middle Ages. Over the years, Kokořín has passed several stages of abandonment and renewal, reflecting the turbulent history of the region.

Look up at the tower, which is the most famous element of the castle. Although its original construction dates back to the 14th century, it was reconstructed by entrepreneur Jan Spaček at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in a neo-gothic style. This stage of renewal returned the castle to its glory, while architect Eduard Sochor contributed to its present appearance.

When you walk past the castle complex, notice the elegant lines and robust structures that tell the story of historical changes. Kokorín Castle witnessed many key events and personalities. In 1426 it was conquered by Hussite troops, a record that is discussed in historical sources. Since 1544, the castle has been registered as desolate and classified among the so-called cursed castles by Emperor Ferdinand II, highlighting its complex history.

Outside Hynek Berk are connected to Kokořín by several important personalities, such as gentlemen from Klinštejn and Kaplířové ze Sulevic. In the 20th century Jan Špaček played a key role in the rediscovery of the castle when he purchased it in 1894 and subsequently reconstructed it.

The interesting thing is that despite his abandonment at the end of the Middle Ages, Kokorøín became known because of his war tower. This structure is not only architectural bravery but also symbolizes the resistance and durability of the castle through the centuries.

You can explore this fascinating place for a few more minutes. Every stone here has its own story, waiting to be told. I hope your visiting day in Kokořín is full of discoveries and inspiration. When you return to the modern world, keep your eyes on this historical memory in your heart. Thank you for your visit!
