kostel Jména Panny Marie (Hory Matky Boží) Church
The Church of the Virgin Mary in the village Hory Matky Boží near Velhartic, Plzeňský kraj, is a Roman Catholic church built probably in the early 17th century and since 1964 protected as a cultural monument. This only church in the area represents an architectural value and is witnessing the rich history of the local community. Its importance lies in the construction style of an early baroque, which manifests itself both in simple interior and in architectural changes over the years.
The history of the church is closely linked to regional events. At the beginning of the 16th century, Hory Matky Boží became the center of silver ore mining, leading to their rapid development. In 1522, King Louis Jagellonian confirmed the town, market and war law, thereby increasing its importance. Probably in 1637, the Church of the Name of the Virgin Mary was built during the Thirty Years' War, which had a major impact on regional political and religious life. This period affected not only the formation of the church but also its further development.
The architecture of the church is characteristic of the early Baroque style. The boat has a rectangular plan and a saddle roof covered with galvanized sheet, which gives the impression of simplicity and elegance. In 1737 the ship was rebuilt and built a tower with onion bagging covered with copper sheet, thus increasing the vertical orientation of the construction. From the north lies the sacristy of a rectangular plan, which in 1833 was added to the old place.
The interior of the church is simple and decorated with a wooden altar with a statue of the Virgin Mary from the 16th century, according to the legend of the carver from Stodůlek. On the side Baroque altars there are wooden statues of the flogged Christ and St. John Nepomuk, which adds religious importance to the church. These works of art not only decorate the interior, but also reflect the historical and cultural value of the church.
After the abolition of the local parish at the end of 2019, the church became a filial of the parish Velhartice. This change in administration did not affect its status as a protected cultural monument, which ensures its protection and care for future generations.
Today, the Church of the Name of the Virgin Mary in the Mountains of the Mother of God is an important historical monument and a place where a deep relationship between the past and the present can be felt. Its simple interior and rich history attract visitors from all over the world looking for knowledge of regional architecture and spiritual life. Visiting this church offers a unique opportunity to explore its historical roots and works of art that enrich the interior. The Church of the Name of the Virgin Mary is not only a monument to the past, but also a living witness to the history and culture of the region, which makes it a special experience.

The Church of the Name of the Virgin Mary in Hory Matky Boží near Velhartice is a Roman Catholic church. Since 1964 it has been protected as a cultural monument. For a long time it served as the parish church of the local parish. This parish was dissolved at the end of 2019 and the church became a subsidiary of the Velhartice parish.
The history of this place is connected with precious metals. Already in the early Middle Ages, gold was panned and mined here. The greatest prosperity came only in the early sixteenth century, when Hory Matky Boží became a significant centre for mining silver ore. Therefore, in 1522, King Ludwig Jagiello granted the town municipal, market, and brewing rights.
The church was probably built in the town in 1637 in the early Baroque style. In 1737, the nave underwent reconstruction and at the same time a bell tower was built. In 1833, a new sacristy was added in place of the old one.
The nave has a rectangular ground plan. It is nine metres and thirteen centimetres long and six metres and eighty centimetres wide. It is covered by a gabled roof made of strips of galvanized sheet metal. The roof ridge above the presbytery is lower than the ridge of the main nave. From the west, a tower adjoins the nave, topped with a subtle onion dome covered with copper sheet. From the north, a sacristy with a rectangular ground plan adjoins the nave.
The interior is simple. Its dominant feature is a central wooden altar with a statue of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. This wooden statue dates from the sixteenth century and measures ninety-five centimetres. According to legend, it was created by a woodcarver from Stodůlky. On two side Baroque altars stand wooden figures of the scourged Christ and Saint John of Nepomuk.
