Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie (Kbel) Church

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Kbel is a notable Gothic single-nave stone church located at the eastern edge of the village of Kbílek, within the Kolín District of Středočeský kraj. Gothic elements are evident in the church's design, such as the lancet arches that separate the nave from the chancel, which spans 4.72 by 4.90 meters. The chancel features a cross vault supported by five-sided ribbed consoles converging at smooth keystone corbels.

Throughout its history, the church has undergone several significant transformations. In 1634, it suffered damage inflicted by Swedish forces during their military campaigns in Bohemia. Subsequently, Renaissance-style repairs were undertaken between 1664 and 1666 under the patronage of Hanuš Fridrich z Trauttmansdorffu. A devastating fire in 1874 destroyed a rare Baroque altar adorned with a painting by Petr Brandl. In response to this loss, the church was renovated in a Neo-Gothic style between 1885 and 1886, although this renovation led to the destruction of many medieval elements.

The church's location on a hill at the eastern edge of Kbel adds to its historical ambiance. The site includes a brick bell tower and a historic boundary wall with a gate, enhancing its architectural ensemble. Despite facing periods of neglect that resulted in deterioration, the church was preserved through amateur repairs conducted by local patriots, Jan and Ladislav Kamarýt.
