The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands on a small hill in Doubice. It is a late Baroque sacral building with elements of Classicism, built between 1811 and 1814. Since 1966 it has been listed as a parish church of the Roman Catholic parish.

Long before its own construction, Doubice did not have its temple. Until the beginning of the 19th century, the village of the parish was responsible first for Chřibské, later for Beautiful Lípa. The Местsi decided to build their sanctuary - in 1810 a separate parish including Doubice and Kyjov was canonically established. The building lasted four years and the church was ceremonially consecrated on 16 April 1815. Just because it was created later than churches in the surrounding municipalities, it became an interesting exception - in later times it was not rebuilt and it was preserved including the interior in almost original form.

The second world war and post-war displacement have come in difficult times. The church found itself out of interest, the maintenance funds were not and the construction decayed. Religious services lasted only until the 1960s, when the temple had already been significantly violated - even the upper part of the tower fell. The rescue came gradually: in 1975 the beautiful lipa administrator P. Alexej Baláž repaired the roof at his own expense, but the complex reconstruction took place only between 1987 and 1988 under the direction of P. František Jirásek. Internal plaster, facade and tower roof have been repaired. The ceremonial consecration after reconstruction was carried out on 13 August 1988 by the Prague consecration bishop Antonín Liška.

The construction is three-boat, built on a rectangular plan with a semi-circular presbytery and northern sacristy. In the facade is placed a prism tower forming a central risalite with a rectangular portal from 1811. On both sides of the tower stands a statue of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. The rough yellow plaster in contrast with white lick creates a harmonious appearance. The interior has several types of arches - from the flat in the undertower to the valence with lunettes in the main ship to the end in the presbytery. Classicist equipment originating from the construction period includes a main altar with a patronage, two side altars, a pulpit and a baptist. The organ from 1820 from the workshop Augustine Lehmann of the Beautiful Field - with two manuals and 15 registers - deserves special attention.

There is still a used cemetery around the church. In its southeast corner is the original morgue, which was rebuilt in 1988 into a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Schönstatt. The cemetery cross was brought from Jablonec nad Nisou in the 1980s. West of the church, the former parish building from 1814, now privately owned, was preserved. The church is managed by the Roman Catholic parish Beautiful Lipa and in the summer from May to October there are religious services every second Saturday from 17.00.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands on a small hill in Doubica in the Šluknovský region. It is a late Baroque building with Neoclassical elements from the years 1811 to 1814. It has been a cultural monument since 1966.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, Doubica had no church of its own. The village belonged to the parish first to Chřibská, then to Krásná Lipa. A separate parish for Doubica and Kyjov was established in 1810. Local residents contributed mainly to the construction of the church, and it was consecrated on April 16, 1815. Because it is a relatively young building, it was not later rebuilt. The church has thus survived in almost its original form, including the interior.

After the Second World War, Doubica was evacuated and there was no money for the maintenance of the church. Regular services were held there until the nineteen-sixties. By then the church was badly deteriorated and the upper part of the tower had collapsed. In 1975, the administrator from Krásná Lipa, Alexej Baláž, began repairs. At his own expense and without official permission, he repaired the roof. A complete reconstruction came only in 1987 and 1988 under the leadership of administrator František Jirásek. The interior plaster, facade and the roof of the tower were restored. The church was then solemnly consecrated on August 13, 1988 by Prague's consecrating bishop Antonín Liška.

The church is three-aisled. It has a rectangular floor plan, a semicircular presbytery, and a sacristy on the north side. A prismatic tower rises from the facade. The portal bears the date 1811, and on either side of the tower stand statues of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary in niches. The facade is made of rough yellow plaster with white pilasters.

The interior is vaulted with several types of vaults. The furnishings with Neoclassical elements date from the time of construction. The most significant are the main altar with a depiction of the church's patroness, two side altars, a pulpit, and a baptismal font. On the gallery are the organ from 1820 by Augustin Lehmann from nearby Krásné Pole. It cost 1200 guilders and has two manuals and 15 registers.

The church is surrounded by a cemetery still in use today. In its southeastern corner stands a former mortuary. In 1988 it was rebuilt into a small chapel of the Virgin Mary of Schönstatt. The cemetery cross opposite the main entrance was brought in the nineteen-eighties from Jablonec nad Nisou. West of the church stands the building of the former rectory from 1814.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is morning or late afternoon when light is softer and Baroque details of the church are most visible. In these times, there is also the greatest calm in the area, which contributes to a better atmosphere while exploring the sacral space.

The monument can be reached by car and public transport; Please check the current traffic connections in the search engine.

Take drinking water and cash payments with you for convenience. For photography are the best places near the cemetery or around the former parish where you get beautiful angles to the church tower in low sunlight.

Within 30 minutes of the church, you can visit the local cemetery, the chapel of the Virgin Mary Schönstatt or the half-walled building of the former rectory from 1814. For kids

Imagine going back to the past, when Doubice was a small town, surrounded by forests and forests. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stood here even then, but it looked quite different than it did today.

It was like a fairy tale - a small village with wooden houses and a church that stood over everyone. Who lived here? Fishermen, farmers, merchants... all gathered around the church to pray and celebrate their anniversary.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the church's surroundings awaken to life and fresh green vegetation creates a pleasant setting around the building. Lighting is very suitable for shooting details of architecture thanks to the softer sun. I recommend wearing layered clothes because the morning air can still be cold. It's the perfect time for a visit if you're looking for peace before summer.

The summer season brings the most light and the full bloom of the surrounding nature, but also the greatest business. Due to high temperatures and large crowds, it is best to arrive first thing in the morning to enjoy the memory in peace. Dress lightly and don't forget enough fluids. In the main summer season, count on the surrounding routes to be very popular.

Autumn in this area offers a magical and melancholy atmosphere, where morning fog lazily rolls across the surrounding terrain and leaf colours give the place a golden touch. Light is low in this period and very interesting to capture the mood of the building. Prepare waterproof shoes and warmer clothing because wet and cooling air can be challenging.

The winter visit offers the most calm, where the snow and frost will create a quiet, fairy tale landscape around the church. Due to short days, plan to visit around the noon hours when the lights are most. It is necessary to have very warm and wind-resistant clothes. In advent time, the atmosphere around the historical object can be particularly noble.
