Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie in Žalmanov is a late Gothic church recognized as a significant cultural monument since the mid-14th century. Situated within the Stružná municipality in Karlovarský kraj, this historical site has undergone numerous transformations reflecting religious and architectural shifts over centuries. Originally built as a parish church, it gained prominence for its resilience during turbulent times such as the Hussite Wars and later adaptations in the Baroque period.

The origins of Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie trace back to the mid-14th century when it was constructed under the patronage of the Rýzmburk family. This era in Bohemia saw significant religious and political changes, including the rise of the Hussite movement, which later impacted the church's history. Initially serving as a parish church for the děkanát in Loket, its role evolved due to historical events.

Architecturally, the church is characterized by its late Gothic style with subsequent Baroque modifications. It features a single-nave orientation on an oblong plan, covered by a metal roof. The slightly recessed three-sided presbytery also has a metal roof. The northern wall of the presbytery houses a sacristy with rectangular openings and smaller windows in its gable ends. A notable addition is the three-story belfry tower, culminating in an octagonal spire covered by a high metal roof. This tower includes oblong portals and round-arched windows.

Throughout its history, Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie has seen several owners and administrators who influenced its development. Initially under the Rýzmburk family's patronage, it later came into the possession of Anna, née von Kolowrat, in 1403, who appointed a new parish priest. The church suffered damage during the Hussite Wars at the beginning of the 15th century, leading to its temporary decline as a parish. In 1487, the presbytery was transformed into a family mausoleum for the Colonies and Šlik families, later expanded in Renaissance style by Kašpar Colony z Felsu and Anna Karolína Šliková in 1578.

Significant events have marked the church's history. In 1606, during Linhart Colona z Felsu's tenure, a new early Baroque nave was added to the existing mortuary chapel with its crypt. This period also saw the appointment of a Protestant clergyman who served from 1618 to 1623. The re-establishment of Catholic administration in 1623 led to the church becoming a filial church under St. Michael Archangel parish in Bochov, later shifting allegiance to Andělská Hora by 1720.

The church's fortunes have fluctuated over time. In 1811, it was severely damaged by fire caused by wind-blown embers from a nearby castle, leading to the destruction of frescoes and organs. Restoration efforts followed, including constructing a new parish house in 1818 and installing new organ pipes from Ferdinand Johann Guth's workshop in 1842. The church underwent further renovations in the late 20th century, with facade restoration in the early 1990s and roof treatment against wood-boring insects and fungi in 2011.

Today, Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie stands as a testament to its rich history and architectural evolution. Although it has faced periods of neglect, recent legal decisions have ensured state responsibility for its preservation. The church remains an important cultural monument, reflecting the historical and religious transformations of the region.
