Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie (Zlaté Hory) Church

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Zlaté Hory is a three-nave parish church that exemplifies historical resilience and architectural transformation. Situated in Zlaté Hory, within the Jeseník District of the Olomoucký Region, this Baroque-style church was originally founded in the 13th century. It holds cultural significance and played an important role in community history, having been fortified to replace a destroyed castle and later rebuilt after a devastating fire.

The origins of the Church of the Assumption trace back to the 13th century when it was first established. Historical records mention the church by 1339 and again in 1377, indicating its early importance as a religious site. In the late 15th century, fortification efforts transformed the church into a replacement for the destroyed Edelštejn Castle. This period marked an important phase in the church's history, reflecting its strategic significance beyond spiritual functions.

Architecturally, the church initially featured Gothic elements typical of its founding era. However, it underwent significant changes following a catastrophic fire on July 17, 1699. The blaze severely damaged the roof, altars, organ, bell, and a crucifix over 400 years old. In response to this disaster, the church was reconstructed in Baroque style under Bishop František Ludvík Neuburg during the late 17th century. Balthasar Chrisostom Hauschild oversaw the initial reconstruction stages, with completion and consecration occurring in 1708 under Johann Anton Hoppe. Despite these extensive changes, remnants of its original Gothic style are still visible today in features such as the old sacristy, a medieval tower positioned before the presbytery, and the church's floor plan.

Throughout its history, the Church of the Assumption has seen various enhancements and modifications. In 1740, J. I. Töpper from Prudník added a new sacristy with an oratory on the northern side of the presbytery. By 1780, a chapel dedicated to St. Joseph was constructed in one of the lateral naves. The church's aesthetic appeal was further enhanced in 1900 when it received frescoes by Franz Templer and Emil Brendel from Zlaté Hory, with Emil Brendel also contributing an image of St. Roch located within the St. Joseph chapel.

In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve and restore this historical monument. Following a comprehensive building survey in November 1999, restoration work began in 2001. This included replacing the entire belfry on the eastern tower and installing a new gilded dome, ensuring that the church remains both structurally sound and visually striking.

Today, the Church of the Assumption stands as a cultural landmark within Zlaté Hory, surrounded by the picturesque landscapes typical of the Jeseník Mountains. Its rich history and architectural evolution make it an intriguing site for visitors interested in exploring the confluence of Gothic and Baroque styles.
