Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary in Sudoměři is a Baroque filial church on the south side of the village. Since 1967, it has been protected as a cultural monument.

The church was built in the second quarter of the 18th century. From this period comes also its most valuable part - the main altar, which originated around 1735 to 1740. It's supposed to be made by the same workshop that worked on the main altar of the Skalk church.

The construction represents a harmonious baroque composition. It is a one-ship, rectangular building with a rectangular presbytery and a rectangular sacristy on the south side of the presbytery. On the south side of the ship, there is a rectangular hall. The characteristic engraving is the pilasters that cut the walls from the outside and inside, supplemented by high windows closed by a semicircle. The Nарo buildings are rounded, the western facade decimates a triangular shield.

The main altar is a baroque work with twisted columns. On the sides there are statues of St. John Nepomuk and St. Anthony of Paduan, in the middle there is a good picture of the birth of the Virgin Mary from the time of the altar. In the upper part of the altar is placed cut Apotheosis of St. John Nepomuk. There is a new picture of the birth of the Virgin Mary in the church ship. The side altar carries a picture of St. Joseph by Fr. Maischaider and an image of God the Father from the 18th century.

In front of the church is a late Gothic wooden bell tower with tiered construction, which dates back to 1615. So he's over a hundred years older than the church itself. There is a bell in the bell tower from 1405.

On the southern side of the village square in Sudoměř stands a Roman Catholic subsidiary church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary. It is a Baroque structure from the second quarter of the 18th century and has been protected as a cultural monument since 1967.

The church has a single nave of rectangular plan, followed by a rectangular presbytery. A rectangular sacristy is attached to its southern side, and a rectangular vestibule is attached to the southern side of the nave. The walls are articulated on the outside and inside with pilasters and tall windows topped with semicircles. The corners of the building are rounded and the western facade is crowned with a triangular gable.

The most valuable part of the furnishings is the Baroque high altar, which was created approximately between 1735 and 1740. It possibly comes from the same workshop as the high altar of the church in Skalko. It has the form of a portal with twisted columns. On the sides stand statues of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Anthony of Padua, in the center is a painting of the Birth of the Virgin Mary. It is a quality painting from the same period as the altar itself. In the upper section is a carved Apotheosis of Saint John of Nepomuk, that is a scene of his glorification. A new painting of the Birth of the Virgin Mary, which was intended for the high altar, hangs in the nave.

A side altar is decorated with a painting of Saint Joseph by the painter Maischaidera and a painting of God the Father from the 18th century.

In front of the church stands a stepped late Gothic wooden bell tower from 1615. A bell from 1405 hangs in it, making it two centuries older than the bell tower itself.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is a late spring or summer afternoon when the sun illuminates the Baroque facade of the church and highlights the details of the historical fence of the cemetery.

The village Sudoměř is available by car and public transport.

For best pictures, use the contrast between the Baroque architecture of the church and the 17th century wooden bell tower. The best lighting conditions for capturing details of the cemetery area are during the so-called gold watch.

In the immediate surroundings you can admire the historic wooden bell tower and cemetery area. For families with children the location is suitable as a quiet stop during a trip to explore rural sacral architecture.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, the church surrounds the awakening nature and fresh greenery, creating an optimistic atmosphere. Soft spring light is ideal for observing facade details. We recommend to dress more layers of clothing because the weather is variable, and schedule a visit to the morning when the air is the cleanest.

The summer season brings a radiant sun and rich green landscape of the Central Bohemian Region. The atmosphere is playful and full of life, but in the high season there can be more visitors. It is advisable to come first thing in the morning to avoid the biggest groups and heat. Don't forget light clothing and plenty of fluids.

In autumn, the surroundings of the church turn into golden and brown tones, which gives the place a nostalgic and peaceful touch. Fog in the morning can create a mysterious scene. Practical is a shoe with a fixed sole due to wet terrain and visit in late afternoon hours, when the low sun pleasantly illuminates the construction.

In winter there is a steepave monument and a quiet impression, especially if a layer of snow covers it. The lighting is colder and the days are short, which underlines the valor of the building. Visiting in advent time offers exceptional peace.
