Kostel Neposkvrněného početí Panny Marie (Svatava) Church

The Church of Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary in Svatava is a Roman Catholic church located in the city of Svatava, area Sokolov, Karlovarský kraj. This architectural jewel created between 1923 and 1924 combines Gothic topics with details of Secessionism. In 2014 it became part of the cultural heritage along with its parish house and highlighted its importance as artistic and historical monuments.

The journey of Svatava to obtain its own church began when it was founded as an independent village in 1850 and later promoted to a city in 1903. Despite the desire of the community for the church, financial constraints slowed construction down until World War I. The basic stone church was laid on 5th August 1923 at the beginning of its realization. He was consecrated by the Assistant Bishop Georg Glosauer on 26 October 1924, who symbolized not only religious devotion, but also the cultural ambition of the city at a time when Czechoslovakia defined its national identity after World War II.

the church is an architectural original combination of Gothic themes with details of Secessionism. It is equipped with a single rectangular construction, which is covered by a polygonal presbytery and ends with a distinctive tower. Although it was originally planned to have a different facade and top design closer to Gothic architecture, the final form shows a harmonious blend of styles. The parish house was completed two years after the church, creating a stylishly unified complex. Inside, the church boasts a wooden panelling with similar appearance, the colourful windows of Richard Schleina depicting the Holy Trinity, St. Catherine and St. Agnes in Rome and various works of art from the early 20th century by Tyrol companies. Equipment and sculptures go back to the time of construction, which reflects the craftsmanship of this time.

Throughout its history, the church maintains a consistent cultural significance. In 1991, a cultural monument of the statue of St. Florian was announced near the church, which further emphasizes the rich heritage of the area. This statue, originally located in the local part of David and created by local sculptor Johann Wildt, complements the historical story around the church.
