The Church of Saint James the Greater, also called the Church of Saint James the Elder, is the parish church in Velká Losenice in the Vysočina region. It stands on the northern edge of the village. Together with the ossuary and the belfry, the entire complex is protected as a cultural monument.
The first written mention of the church dates back to the twelfth century. For a long time it was not an independent parish. Until sixteen ninety-six it belonged as a filial church to the parish in Polná and then until seventeen forty-six to the parish in Borová. Only from that time on has it been a parish church.
It suffered a heavy blow on April seventh, sixteen twenty-one. Then it burned down along with part of the village and the bells melted in the fire. New bells were cast and placed in the church already in sixteen twenty-two.
It is a single-nave Gothic structure. The chancel ends in a polygonal apse divided by buttress pillars. In the apse there are five windows on five sides of an octagon. The tower stands on the northern side of the chancel and a staircase is built at its eastern side. Today there is a modern entrance in the ground floor of the tower, but the original Gothic entrance still leads to the sacristy. On the western side of the nave is a gallery with a round window opening into it. The church is covered with a sheet metal pitched roof.
The tower underwent several repairs. In eighteen fifty-two it was reconstructed and in eighteen eighty-eight it was repaired again after it was damaged by a storm.
The interior furnishings were transformed gradually. In sixteen eighty-nine the church acquired the main altar, and later side altars were added. In a niche of the main altar is a statue of Saint James and above the altar hangs a painting of the Holy Trinity. The furnishings also include a baptismal font from seventeen fifty-five, a chalice, candlesticks and three bells. At the end of the eighteenth century the interior was renovated. In the first third of the nineteenth century the church was dried out, it received new pews and the altar and ceilings were repaired. At the beginning of the twentieth century the interior was decorated with motifs based on designs by Mikoláš Aleš.
West of the church stands a separate hexagonal ossuary with circular windows from seventeen forty-six. A late Gothic gate leads to the cemetery, which was probably part of the defensive structures around the church.
