Kostel svatého Jana Křtitele (Svatojanský Újezd) Church

The Church of Saint John the Baptist in Svatojanský Újezd is a Roman Catholic filial church recognized as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Situated in the picturesque Královéhradecký kraj, this neogothic structure stands on the site of an earlier 14th-century wooden church. Originally consecrated on September 12, 1352, during Charles IV's reign, it has undergone significant transformations over the centuries, reflecting both architectural evolution and historical shifts in ownership.

The origins trace back to the 14th century when a timber-framed structure was erected under Bořek z Poličan's patronage. Consecrated during Charles IV and Archbishop Arnošt z Pardubic's time, it served as a spiritual center for the local community. By the late 17th century, concerns over its structural integrity led Berthold Vilém z Valdštejna to encase it with stone and brick in 1691. Despite these efforts, by the late 19th century, the deteriorating wooden framework necessitated demolition.

The current neogothic church was constructed between 1887 and 1888, replacing its predecessor. Built from sandstone blocks sourced from Vojice, this new structure reflects a revival in national identity and historical preservation during the Austro-Hungarian Empire's influence over Czech lands. The construction was funded by various patrons, including Anna z Assenburgu, whose family’s coat of arms adorns the church portal.

Architecturally, the Church of Saint John the Baptist features a single-nave design with a slightly protruding belfry above the western façade. This belfry, constructed from sandstone blocks and topped with a cross, serves as a prominent feature. The building's roof is supported by wooden beams and was originally covered in slate. Inside, the church has two windows on each of its southern and northern walls, leading into a four-sided apse. A sacristy attached to the south side provides access to a wooden pulpit.

Ownership and administration have seen notable figures over the centuries. Initially under Bořek z Poličan's patronage, it later came under Berthold Vilém z Valdštejna, who initiated its stone reconstruction in 1691. By the time of its neogothic rebuild, Anna z Assenburgu played a significant role in financing the project.

Key events include its original consecration in 1352 and subsequent structural changes. The 1883 demolition of the deteriorating wooden structure marked a pivotal moment leading to the construction of the current edifice. Additionally, a memorial plaque near the entrance commemorates World War I victims, adding historical depth to the site.

Today, the Church of Saint John the Baptist remains an active place of worship, with services held occasionally.
