Kostel svatého Jana Nepomuckého (Kličín) Church

Welcome to St. John Nepomuk's Church in Kličín. You are facing one of the most interesting Baroque sacral structures in our region, which, with its unusual ground plan and rich decoration, still attracts attention. This church, built in the middle of the eighteenth century, is not only an architectural jewel, but also a witness to the faith, art and determination of the people who saved it from forgetting. Look around you. In front of you is the facade of the church, divided by vertical lizen frames and nobodies - typical of Baroque architecture, which gives the impression of nobility and harmonious arrangement. The church has a floor plan of an elongated octagonal, which is a rather unusual solution for sacral buildings. This shape gives the whole building a light dynamic as if it wanted to swing over the surrounding landscape. The facade is simple but dignified, and its details refer to the Baroque tradition, which at that time influenced not only the ecclesiastical but also the secular architecture.

Let's go back to when this church was founded. The construction started in 1734 on the basis of the project of the masonry master J. Löffler from the nearby monastery over Ohří. It was a time when the Baroque style reached its peak, and churches became not only places of worship, but also works of art. In 1737 one of the most valuable elements was placed here - the Baroque statue of St. John Nepomuk, created by the great sculptor Jan Adam Dietz. This statue, although it is no longer * in situ *, was once the center of the attention of believers and artists. The church was completed in 1738, and since then it has served as a spiritual centre for locals.

Now pay attention to the details surrounding you. Although time and weather have left traces on the facade, it is still possible to see the original concept. Lizens, those vertical mounting frames, divide the facade into parts and create a rhythm that is typical of baroque architecture. Niky - the niche in the wall - were originally designed for sculptures or reliefs that supplied the church with another dimension. The interior, although we can't see it now, was encapsulated by a flat vault with Yonian pilasters, which suggests careful processing of every detail. The inner space was probably illuminated by windows and richly decorated with sculptures, which was characteristic of Baroque churches.

But the church has not always had a happy fate. In 1964 he was enrolled among cultural monuments, which was intended to protect its value. However, in the 1980s he made the list of demolition objects. This would mean loss not only of architectural but also of historical heritage. Fortunately, we managed to mobilize the public who opposed the demise of this monument. Thanks to their efforts, the church has been saved and still stands as a reminder that, under certain circumstances, human solidarity and the love of heritage can overcome even the greatest obstacles.

The interesting thing is that this church was built at a time when the Baroque style slowly changed towards Classicism. His plan - the elongated octagonal - is really unusual. While most churches have circular or elliptical ground plan, here the architect opted for a solution that is rather exceptional. This choice could be inspired not only by aesthetics, but also by functions - perhaps the church wanted to adapt to the surrounding terrain better or offer other experiences to believers during services.
