Kostel svatého Martina (Břvany) Kostel

The Church of Saint Martin in Břvany is a Roman Catholic parish church dedicated to Saint Martin. It stands at the southern edge of the village within Ústecký kraj on the site of a former cemetery. The structure blends late Gothic style with baroque influences, particularly evident in its tower reconstruction by architect Pavel Ignác Bayer in 1720. Since 1964, it has been recognized as a cultural monument due to its historical and architectural significance.

The church's origins date back to when Bohemia experienced significant religious and political changes leading up to the Hussite Wars. Construction likely began around 1501 or 1502 in the late Gothic style. However, dendrochronological analysis indicates that timber used for roofing was felled in 1550, suggesting a delay possibly due to natural disaster or other unforeseen circumstances. Architecturally, the church is characterized by its late Gothic style with subsequent baroque influences. It is a single-nave building oriented towards the east, featuring a square tower on its northern side with oblong and semi-circular windows. This porch includes a profiled portal framed by a pointed arch, partially cut into the facade. The presbytery is polygonally closed and supported by buttresses adorned with carved heraldic shields, illuminated by six large ogival windows. A rood screen from the sixteenth century adds to its historical charm.

Throughout its history, the church has undergone several significant changes in administration and structure. In 1785, it was elevated to a local parish status, and by 1856, it became the seat of its own parish with P. Karl Dietrich as the first appointed priest. The tower, added in 1580, underwent substantial reconstruction in 1720 under baroque architect Pavel Ignác Bayer. This period also saw the addition of a rood screen and modifications to the cemetery wall.

The church is home to several notable features that enhance its historical and artistic value. The main altar, crafted in the early baroque style around 1674, is adorned with images of Saint Martin and Saint Joseph from the nineteenth century. Rookery bells cast in the workshop of Brikcí z Cimperka, dated to 1581, are housed within the church. Additionally, rococo side altars dedicated to Saint John Nepomucene and the Virgin Mary, along with a pulpit decorated with images of Christ and the evangelists from 1703, contribute to its rich interior.
