Kostел Saint Martin dedicated to the patron saint of pilgrims and soldiers stands in the heart of the village Cerhovice on Beroun in Central Bohemia. Since 2006, he has been a Filial Church of the Parish of Žebrák, formerly based here his own parish.

The first historical references are known about the chaplain operating in Cerhovice in 1329. The oldest documented report of the church itself dates back to 1367, when there was a construction made of wood, which was later hit by devastating fire destruction. Today's church was built in the 15th century, and the brothers Bedřich and Hanuš z Kolovrat were connected to its construction, whose patronage rights to the church were documented in 1421. The construction was then faced with further testing - the fire accidents became fatal in 1678 and 1728. After the second fire, its appearance changed: in the period after 1728, the construction was rebuilt from the original Gothic style to the Baroque style. The formal consecration was then carried out in 1825, when Josef Vorel was a vicar. He later became famous in the broader ecclesiastical context - on 11 May 1842 he led the marriage of Karl Jaromír Erben in the jane of the approaching masonry. The church underwent further modernization in 1871, when building modifications were made to the building itself and to the parish office. Two years later, the church clock was restored. The last major reconstruction took place in 1948, when the church was equipped with a new plaster, renewed clock figures and replaced roof.

Architecturally, it is a one-ship rectangular structure with a massive prism tower on the south side. The presbytery is closed by polygonal emporium and equipped with a gothic rib arch with embossed decoration. The ship has a wall image of Christ surrounded by saints, dating back to 1735 and being the work of Franz Ferdinand Müller. The main altar is a pseudo-gothic piece with a dry marble menza and a golden white tabernacle with e-mail decorations representing four evangelists. The four side altars come from the first half of the 18th century in the Baroque - one dedicated to the Virgin Mary with a painting by Rudolf C. Kripner, the other dedicated to Jan Nepomucký around 1740, the third Holy Cross and the fourth St. Joseph. Other determinable elements are baroque tin baptizer and wooden pulpit. The church contains a plaster statue of St. Wenceslas, which originally stood in Mayer's brewery, and another statue of St. Teresa with Jesus. The windows are decorated with stained glass, which is allegedly from the same master who made the windshield in the Prague Cathedral of St. Vitus. The church organ is a work from 1912. In the Monograph of Hořovicka and Berounska from 1928, the Cerhovický church is designated as one of the most beautifully decorated temples in Bohemia.

The bells are also an important part. The main bell of St. Martin was poured out in 1746, weighing 350 kilograms and has a diameter of 84 centimetres. The second bell dedicated to St. John Nepomuk and St. Wenceslas weighs 170 kilograms with a diameter of 66 cm. In a small tower there is a small sanctus bell with a picture of the Virgin Mary with a diameter of 28 cm. During the wars many bells were taken away, but at least the bell of St. John Nepomuk and St. Wenceslas returned.

The church is still the place of the spiritual life of the village and its architecture and decoration remains a testament to several centuries of Czech sacral culture.

Architectural development

Today's construction dates back to the 15th century at the site of an older wooden church that died of fire. The presbytery kept the original Gothic cross rib arch, while the ship and its overall nature were baroque modified after 1728 by builder Tomáš Haffenecker. In the interior there are four Baroque side altars and a pseudo-gothic main altar. In 1948 there was a major reconstruction involving new plaster, clock repair and roof replacement.

Historical events

The first written mention of the church dates back to 1367, but earlier reports show the existence of the rectory in 1329. Over the centuries the church was damaged several times by fires, for example in 1678 and 1728, followed by its extensive Baroque reconstruction. During the first and second World War, the historical bells were propped, while only the commemorative bell of St. Martin from 1746 was preserved.

The Church of Saint Martin stands in the center of Cerhovice in the Beroun region. For a long time it was the parish church, and since 2006 it has belonged as a branch church to the parish of Žebrák.

The church probably already stood here in the year 1329, when an inspection of the Cerhovice parish is mentioned. The first direct mention of it comes from 1367. The church at that time was wooden and burned down. Today's building was created in the 15th century. In 1421 the brothers Friedrich and John of Kolovrat held patronage rights over it. Further fires damaged the church in 1678 and 1728. After the second one the originally Gothic church was converted to the Baroque style. It was consecrated in 1825. At that time Joseph Vorel was active here, who in 1842 performed a wedding ceremony in the Žďár church for Charles Jaromir Erben. A major reconstruction took place in 1948. The church then received new plaster and a roof and the clock faces were also restored.

It is a single-nave rectangular building with a massive square tower on the south side. In the presbytery a Gothic cross-ribbed vault has been preserved. The vault of the nave is decorated with a wall painting of Christ among a multitude of saints by Franz Ferdinand Müller from before 1735.

The high altar is pseudo-Gothic. Its mensa is made of Suchomasty marble and the front side is made of Hořice sandstone. The tabernacle of gilded tombac has doors decorated with symbols of the evangelists and forty gemstones. Four side altars are Baroque and date from the first half of the 18th century. One bears an image of the Virgin Mary, the others are connected with Saint John of Nepomuk, the Holy Cross and Saint Joseph. Baroque are also the tin baptismal font and the wooden pulpit. A plaster statue of Saint Wenceslas originally stood in a niche of the Mayer brewery. The stained glass windows in the windows were allegedly created by the same artist as the front stained glass window in the Saint Vitus Cathedral. The organ dates from 1912. A monograph from 1928 ranks the Cerhovice church among the most beautifully decorated temples in Bohemia.

Five bells once hung in the tower. During the First World War two old bells and small bells from the small tower were taken away. In April 1942 all remaining ones disappeared except for the famous bell of Saint Martin. After the war only the bell of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Wenceslas returned. The fate of the others is unknown. The main bell of Saint Martin dates from 1746 and weighs 350 kilograms.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring in Cerhovice brings awakening nature, when the surrounding greenery and blooming trees create a gentle contrast to the historical walls of St. Martin's Church. The sun rays fall at a mild angle and highlight the details of the stone masonry, which will be especially appreciated by lovers of morning landscape photography. In this period you will not meet large crowds of tourists, so you will enjoy the tour in complete peace. Since spring weather is usually variable and the wounds are cold, we recommend wearing a non-inflatable jacket and solid shoes, because the lawn around the monument may be wet after rain. The best time to visit is in the morning when the sun lights up the main facade.

Summer offers the most lively atmosphere of the main tourist season, where the monument is planted in a lush, rich green landscape full of leafy trees. Intense afternoon sun casts sharp shadows that give sacral construction a dramatic expression, but for calmer admiration of exteriors it is preferable to late afternoon, when temperatures drop slightly. Although there are no mass crowds like in the most famous Czech cities, you will find more tourists on weekends. Get ready with light breathable clothes, sunglasses and bottles of drinking water, because there is little natural shade around the church. The ideal time for a tour is early morning or an hour before sunset, when the light is softest.

Autumn covers Cerhovice into a colorful palette of shades from yellow to dark red, which gives the monument a melancholy and extraordinarily photogenic character. The low sun creates long shadows and a misty wound gives the place a mystical atmosphere that underlines the centuries-old history of the construction. In this period, you will meet only unique bystanders, so you will enjoy the atmosphere undisturbed. As the cold wind blows and temperatures fall fast, remember the warm sweater, scarf and waterproof shoes on the fallen, slippery leaves. The best time to visit is around noon, when the fog breaks apart and the sun warms the most.

Winter turns the surroundings of St. Martin's church into a peaceful scenery, often covered by a layer of snow reflecting dim daylight. Shero and earlier dimming create a chamber atmosphere, especially in advent time, when the whole village shuts down and prepares for the holidays. Tourism is completely quiet at this time, so you will see the memory in complete privacy. The key is to choose winter equipment, i.e. high-quality warm footwear with anti-slip soles, gloves and a warm hat, because the outdoor stay near cold walls will quickly check your resistance. Plan your arrival for the early afternoon to catch the daylight before sunset.
