Kostel svatého Michaela archanděla (Bochov) Church

St. Michael Archangel Church in Bochov is proof of the resilience and cultural development of this region near Karlovy Vary. Originally built in the 15th century, it underwent numerous transformations reflecting its historical significance and architectural adaptability. This Baroque church is not only an important milestone but also symbolizes the stormy history of medieval Bohemia.

The origin of the church dates back to the 15th century, when it replaced the older church dedicated to St. Jacob. His early Gothic structure was destroyed by Hussites in 1437, reflecting the religious upheaval of this period. Despite these challenges, the church was rebuilt with the support of the city of Cheb and continued to serve its community through various ads.

The church is experiencing several phases. Originally built as a late Gothic structure, it has undergone significant changes over the centuries. In 1597, Adam starší Steinsdorf ze Steinsdorfu financed its reconstruction in Renaissance style, which included a family tomb within the church. The most transformative period came between 1666 and 1667, when the church was rebuilt in Baroque style after a devastating fire. In this era, there were also new bells and other baroquization in 1744, which included uniform baroque equipment.

During its history, the church was influenced by various owners and administrators. After the Battle of the White Mountain, new clerics were installed with the help of the Heat Monastery. The Chernín family played a key role in financing Baroque reconstruction at the end of the 17th century. These changes reflect the broader political and cultural shifts that are taking place in Europe at this time.

Among the key events in the history of the church is its destruction of husita, fires and pillaging, each indicating significant periods of reconstruction and transformation. Installation of the organ in 1780 Johann Georg Ignatz Schmidt added to his artistic heritage, with subsequent restaurants ensuring its continued use for sacred music.

Today, the church stands as a well-preserved monument after extensive reconstruction efforts between 1999 and 2002, culminating in a new roof in 2009. Despite previous challenges, it remains an active place where the masses are still being held.
