kostel svatého Michaela (Děčín XXIV-Krásný Studenec) Church

The Church of Saint Michael in Krásný Studenec, today part of Děčín, no longer stands. It was a baroque single-nave church and was demolished in November 1966.

Krásný Studenec, in Latin Pulcher fons and in German Schönborn, is first mentioned in 1352 as part of the Ústí deanery. The church was apparently poor, because only in 1405 could it pay a tithe of three groats. The oldest known local vicar was Jakub, who in 1363 inducted a priest in Rozběleších. A year later he left and the patron of the church, Jan z Vartemberka, appointed priest Ota Petra from Ústí nad Labem in his place. He resigned in 1366 and was replaced by Jan z Ústí. During the Thirty Years' War the rectory remained vacant. From 1702 the parish permanently belonged to the newly established rectory in Děčín-Podmoklady. In 1712 the original medieval building was fundamentally rebuilt in baroque style.

The church had a narrow rectangular chancel vaulted with a barrel vault and two lunettes. A massive, low, two-storey tower adjoined its north side. The first storey had rectangular windows, the second had windows topped with semicircles. It bore a massive onion dome and in its ground floor was a barrel-vaulted sacristy. The main entrance on the south side of the nave was protected by a baroque vestibule. The three-axial western facade was crowned with a triangular gable with spirelets.

From the furnishings, a renaissance side altar from 1605, a work by Dittrich the Elder from Freiberg, was successfully preserved. It belongs among very valuable monuments. After restoration in Jihlava, it was placed in the Church of Saint Francis in Podmoklady from June 1958. There also went a stone baptismal font from the fifteenth century and a statue of Saint Václav. A bell for the church was cast in 1587 by Wolf Hilger from the famous bell-founder family that worked in Saxon Freiberg. The organ was built in 1718 by Leopold Spiegel.

After the war the church deteriorated. Communist authorities promised the rectory in 1956 two hundred and forty thousand crowns for repairs, but the money was never provided. In 1966 the local national committee requested demolition and the district national committee in Děčín approved it. The objects of historical interest were stored in the Church of Saint Václav in Děčín. From the church on the square only a desolate cemetery wall remained. A children's playground was created in its place.
