The parish church Šitbořice has a long, hard history inscribed in stones. The original temple was built a year ago, 1255, and its founder's name was not preserved. The medieval church served the faithful for several centuries, until a disaster hit him in the dramatic year 1645 - he was burned along with the whole village. After this devastation, the parishioners rebuilt it in 1669 in the Baroque style, but it was preserved only in the form of photographs from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

At the end of the nineteenth century, this Baroque church was no longer sufficiently sufficient for a growing village. So it was decided to build a whole new temple, which was supposed to arise at the site of the old one. The new church was built in New Romanesque style and consecrated on September 28, 1913 on the feast of St. Wenceslas. The single-boat structure thus represents a new beginning - the resurrection of parochial life in modern form.

The twentieth and twenty-first centuries then brought care of the preservation of this church. In 2013, exactly a hundred years after the ordination, large repairs were made - a new roof was laid and the facade was repaired. At the turn of 2019 and 2020, the church got a new look in the form of a complete internal painting.

There is a set of bells from 1947. These are five bells bearing the names of saints and Czech tradition: Cyril and Methodius (656 kg), Mikuláš (373 kg), Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace (209 kg), Václav (139 kg) and Vojtěch (45 kg). The bells and the bells gradually descend from both iconography and weight, and their voice continues to announce the liturgical times of the parish.

The church of St. Nicholas in Šitbořice is thus witnessing the long duration - medieval religion, Baroque, modern and our present age. It combines the craft of four centuries with the care of today's generations.

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Šitbořice is the parish church of the local parish. It is a single-nave building in the Neoromanesque style, built between nineteen ten and nineteen thirteen on the site of the original medieval church.

The older church, also dedicated to Saint Nicholas, stood in Šitbořice already before the year twelve fifty-five. Who founded it is not known. In sixteen forty-five it burned down together with the entire village. In sixteen sixty-nine it was rebuilt in the Baroque style. We know this Baroque form today only from photographs from the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

By the end of the nineteenth century, the old church was no longer sufficient in capacity, and so preparations began for the construction of a new one. It was built on the same site. It was consecrated on the twenty-eighth of September nineteen thirteen, on the feast day of Saint Wenceslas.

The church underwent a major renovation in two thousand thirteen. It received a new roof and a restored facade at that time. At the turn of twenty nineteen and twenty twenty, the entire interior of the church was then completely repainted.

In the church tower today hang the third set of bells. They date from nineteen forty-seven and consist of five bells. The largest, dedicated to Cyril and Methodius, weighs six hundred fifty-six kilograms. This is followed by the bell of Nicholas with three hundred seventy-three kilograms and the bell of the Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, with two hundred nine kilograms. Smaller are the bell of Wenceslas, which weighs one hundred thirty-nine kilograms, and the smallest, Vojtěch, which has only forty-five kilograms.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit St. Nicholas' church is during the spring and summer months, when the outdoor light is favourable and nature around the monument is full of beauty. In summer, cultural events or services are often held that can enrich the visit. If you want to escape the crowds, go to the church in the morning or in the late afternoon when the place is quieter.

Check the current connection and time tables in the traffic search engine.

When visiting take on comfortable clothes and shoes as the church is located in a historic village with uneven terrain. It is also appropriate to take an umbrella or light sun protection, especially in the summer months. If you plan to stay longer, you can also bring a drink and a light snack, but you do not eat or drink in the church itself.

For photographic interested people, the best time for early morning or late afternoon images is when the light is softer and creates pleasant shadows. The exterior facade of the church is best photographed, which is typical of the New Romanesque style, as well as the inner space, especially the altar part. The inside of the church, however, should only be photographed during services or open days when allowed.

Several interesting places are worth visiting around St. Nicholas' church. The Šitbořice Chateau is about a kilometre away, offering a tour of the historical chateau with a rich history. For lovers of history is an interesting destination of Chateau Mikulčice, located near Pálava.

Families with children can enjoy several activities around the church. Children can see different kinds of plants and animals here. At the Šitbořice Chateau there are often cultural events or tours that can be interesting for children. In the church itself it is possible to see historical interiors and explain the history of the place to children.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring In the spring months, the Church of St. Nicholas in Šitbořice is dressed in a green dress, when the surrounding meadows and forests flourish and the sun's rays flow into the interior through coloured stained windows. The specific weather here is mild but variable - often wet in the morning, sunny in the afternoon, which creates soft light that highlights the details of stone statues and frescoes. The atmosphere is calm, almost intimate, because the tourist crowds are not as numerous as in summer. Practical advice: a visit is recommended in the first half of the day when the church is lit by natural light and temperatures are pleasant. Suitable is the clothes layered - spring rains can cross in the sunny season, and comfortable shoes for possible walks around the surrounding village. The right time is April and May, when nature offers the most beautiful contrast between historical construction and blooming countryside.

Summer In the summer months, the church will turn into a living space where the sun falls directly on its facade and creates sharp shadows that emphasize Gothic details. The surrounding landscape is dry and golden, but there are often outdoor events around the village that bring a more lively atmosphere to the place. In the main summer season (July and August) the church is usually visited most and it is therefore advisable to come early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds. Warm clothes, light but covering the shoulders (to respect the interior), and plenty of water are necessary. It is also convenient to use the shade of trees in the surrounding area where you can relax during the tour.

Autumn Autumn brings golden leaves and cooler air to Šitbořice, which gives the church a mysterious, alter gothic atmosphere. The sun sets earlier and therefore the interior of the church is lit only by candles and small window openings, which creates intimate, almost mystical space. There is also a specific sound - the rustling of the leaves and distant bells from the surrounding villages add peace. In September and October the attendance is lower, but in November (especially around St. Catherine's Day) the church can be visited by more pilgrims. It is recommended to warm but not too heavy clothes because temperatures fall, and visit in the afternoon when light is softer. It is also appropriate to visit the surrounding cemetery, where autumn colours are most beautiful.

Winter Winter Šitbořice offers the church as a cozy shelter from frost, when the snow cover of the surrounding trees and the white coat of the village create a fabulous setting. The sun rarely penetrates the interior, and therefore the church is lit only by candles and artificial light, which gives the space a calm, meditative atmosphere. In Advent time there are often small services or concerts that increase the Christmas mood. Practical advice: a visit is recommended in the morning when the church is open and the heat inside contrasts with the outside cold. It is suitable for warm but comfortable clothing (laminated, with gloves and hat), because it is often cold outside. Opening times are shorter in winter, so it is good to check in advance whether the church is accessible.
