Kostel svatého Petra a Pavla (Sutom) Kostel

The Church of Saint Peter and Paul in Sutom is a baroque sacred building located at the foot of Sutom Hill near the village of Sutom, part of Třebenice. First mentioned in historical records in the 1380s, it underwent significant reconstruction between 1716 and 1724, resulting in its current baroque appearance. The church features a single-nave rectangular structure with a semi-cylindrical apse and side sacristy. Adjacent to the church stands a small wooden bell tower. Both the church and nearby rectory have been protected as cultural monuments since 1964. This site is notable not only for its architectural significance but also for being the location of an important historical event: on May 20, 1845, the parents of poet and writer Svatopluk Čech were married here.

The church's origins trace back to at least the late 14th century, with its current baroque form established during a major renovation from 1716 to 1724. Historical sources suggest that Octavius Broggio, an architect from Litoměřice, is often credited with this transformation. During the late 17th and early 18th centuries, when the church was reconstructed in its baroque form, Bohemia experienced significant religious and architectural developments under Habsburg rule. This period saw a flourishing of baroque art and architecture across Europe, reflecting broader cultural shifts.

Architecturally, the Church of Saint Peter and Paul is characterized by its single-nave rectangular structure with a semi-cylindrical apse and side sacristy. The church features lisened frames, segmental arches, and a conch-shaped apse with lunettes. Facades are adorned with lisened frames and high-set segmental windows. The main façade includes pilasters and a central risalit with an oblong portal, topped by a coat of arms. An oblong pediment is triangularly shaped with volute brackets, pilasters, a lisened frame, and a niche. The church's interior includes a triumphal arch that is semicircular, with the nave having barrel vaulting with lunettes and bands. A loft is brick-built, underarched by a wide band of barrel vaulting, and supported by a large segmental arch spanning the entire width of the nave.

The church's interior houses several notable artistic features. The main altar is baroque from the early 18th century, featuring an image of Saints Peter and Paul along with figures of God the Father and angels in the predella. A side altar also contains an image of the Virgin Mary in an acanthus frame, while another baroque altar features an image of Saint Barbara from the early 18th century. The pulpit dates to the same period as the main altar and includes statues of the evangelists on its sounding board. An rococo confessional is present, along with an image of Saint Anne with the Virgin Mary from the 17th century. Additional artworks include images of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, Saint Vincent Ferrer, and Saint John Nepomuk from the mid-18th century. Baroque sculptures of Saints John Nepomucene and Wenceslas are also present, alongside a baroque stone baptismal font with a tin basin dated to 1724.

In its vicinity, the church is accompanied by a small pyramidal wooden bell tower next to the entrance. This bell tower was originally constructed in the early 18th century during the church's reconstruction and later modified in the 19th century. Additionally, a statue of Saint Joseph from 1796 is located outside the village. The rectory building (No. 1) nearby is also part of the cultural heritage site.
