The Church of St. Prokop in Blažimi in Lounsk is a Baroque building dating back to the late 1970s and 1980s. Since 1964 it has been included in the list of cultural monuments, officially protected as an important witness to the architecture of its time and local history.

The original Blažima church, the Gothic temple of the older date, was demolished in the 1970s. A new building in the late Baroque style was built in its place between 1778 and 1781. The project was most likely addressed by Žetek builder Johann Paul Loschy. The budget for the construction of 8184 gold pieces was signed in 1768 together with the masonry master Jakobic, who then became a practical realtor of the construction. The financing was provided by the owners of Schwarzenberg, namely Jan Nepomuk Schwarzenberg.

Architecturally, the church is a one-ship building with an ousted presbytery closed into a semicircle. Side facades are divided by the Lizen frames, the tower rises above the west front. The ship is glazed with Czech patties, the walls are broken down by Pilasters with Yonian headers. The main altar, walled-up pillar, bears the painting of St. Prokop signed by the painter Leo Maeltzer. The reliquaries on the altar carry the signature of Mathias Seel and the date 1781. The baptism is of a stone, gothic nature and probably originated from an original, demolished church. The pulpit is the work of the late 18th century. The organ produced in 1800 by the unintended organist Müller did not survive and died during the second half of the 20th century.

The three stone tombstones of the nobles are particularly valuable, which are carried from the original temple to the present day. These are the tombstones of Magdalena Žlebová, the wife of Pavel from Vřesovice † 1520, Carola Dubanski from Duban, the wife of John from Vřesovice † 1558, and Ludmili Hochhauser born Selmik from Cítov, the wife of Václav Hochhauzer from Hochhauz † 1586.

The Church of St. Prokop is a testament to the arrival of the baroque in Lounia, as well as a testimony about the power of the Schwarzenberg estate, which in the second half of the 18th century could afford to build a representative temple on its estate.

The Church of Saint Prokop in Blažimi in the Louny region is a Baroque structure from the late eighteenth century. It stands on the site of an older Gothic church that was demolished in the seventies of the eighteenth century. The new church in the style of late Baroque was completed in seventeen eighty-one. Since nineteen sixty-four it has been registered as a cultural monument.

The project was most likely created by the Žatec builder Johann Paul Loschy. His signature appears on a plan from seventeen sixty-eight, which contains a floor plan, a front elevation of the main and side façades, and several cross-sections of the building. Loschy also signed the budget for eighty-one hundred eighty-four golden. Beside his name on the plan is the signature of bricklayer Jakub Jakobic, who carried out the construction as the master mason. Ferdinand Maděra later attributed the project to Jakobic himself. However, he was not familiar with the work, which was based on documents from the Postolprty estate. The construction was paid for by the owners of the local estate, the Schwarzenbergs, specifically Jan Nepomuk Schwarzenberg.

The church has one nave and is adjoined by a narrower presbytery, closed off in a semicircle. Side façades are divided by pilaster strips and above the western façade rises a tower. The nave is vaulted with Czech tiles and its walls are divided by pilasters with Ionic capitals.

The main altar is built of stone, with columns, and bears an image of Saint Prokop signed by Leo Maeltzer. The reliquaries on the altar are signed with the name Mathias Seel and dated to seventeen eighty-one. A stone Gothic baptismal font apparently comes from the original church. The pulpit dates from the late eighteenth century. The organ from eighteen hundred by the organ builder Müller from Nepomyšl disappeared in the second half of the twentieth century.

According to the description by Jaroslav Schaller, the church had three tombstones of noblewomen from the original structure. The first belonged to Magdalena Žlebová, the wife of Pavel from Vřesovic, who died in fifteen twenty. The second to Carole Dubanská from Dubany, the wife of Jan from Vřesovic, who died in fifteen fifty-eight. The third to Ludmila Hochhauserová, born Selmická from Cítov, the wife of Václav Hochhauser from Hochhauzu, who died in fifteen eighty-six.

For kids

Imagine going back to a time when St. Prokop's church hasn't been built yet. It's like it's turned into a ball and you stepped out of it at the top of the village Blažim. Walk over the road and you'll see how the village lives like a fairy tale.

At that time, the village was surrounded by forests and polems. People used to feed on agriculture and livestock. The church of St. Prokop was just a small wooden temple where mass took place and people prayed for wealth and health. The villagers lived in harmony with nature and loved their pets.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring In spring, the Church of St. Prokopa offers in Blažimi's unique atmosphere, where its stone walls are projected into a soft, scattered light that penetrates between blooming trees in the surrounding area. After rainy days, the forests around the church turn into green carpet, while sunny moments reveal subtle details of Gothic and Baroque elements such as stucco decorations or stained glass. The air is fresh and light, ideal for walking along the surrounding roads leading to nearby ponds. It is recommended to visit the church early in the morning or in the afternoon when traffic is lower and light creates pleasant shadows inside. Clothes should be layered - spring weather is variable, and even when the sun welcomes, evenings can be cold. Comfortable shoes are also suitable because after the rain the paths can be muddy.

Summer In the summer months, the Church of St. Prokopa becomes a centre of peace and rest, where its interior offers relief from the sun's heat outside. A warm afternoon requires a visit early in the morning, when the church is still in the shade and the air is pleasantly cold. The surrounding area is green and lively, forests and meadows attract to walks, while the church has a quiet, almost meditative atmosphere. It is recommended light but decent clothes - the church is a religious place, and although it is often visited by tourists in summer, it is advisable to respect its character. In the main summer season there can be groups of tourists, especially on Sunday or the holiday of St. Prokop (12 July), when the church is often full of believers. Hydration and sun protection are essential, especially with longer walks around.

Autumn Autumn brings a unique colour to Blažimi and its church of St. Prokop, when tree leaves around the church are colored in golden and red shades that are reflected in glass windows. Cooler air and short days create a quiet, nostalgic atmosphere where the church acts as a cosy shelter from wind weather. The inner spaces are warm and well lit, ideal for observing details of paintings or sculptures. It is recommended to visit the church in the afternoon when the sun shines oblique and creates long shadows that highlight architectural details. Clothes should be warm but not too bulky - more people move in the church, and even if the space is spacious, narrow corridors can be uncomfortable. In advent time, the church becomes a place of peace and preparation for Christmas, where there are often meetings or concerts.

Winter The winter visit of the Church of St. Prokop is an experience for those who appreciate its calm and mysterious atmosphere during the period when nature rests under the snow cover. The church, surrounded by a white coat, acts as a picturesque view of the fairy tale, while its interior offers cosy warmth and comfort. It is recommended to warm but comfortable clothes - in winter the church is often visited in cold weather, and even though it is warm inside, the crossing from the outside can be sudden. Due to the lower traffic rates, it is possible to look at the details that are only marginally attracted at other times. The surrounding area of the church, covered with snow, offers the possibility of short walks, but only for those who are ready for cold and maybe even an iceberg on the road.
