The church of St. Wenceslas in Žitovlice is one of interesting examples of late Baroque sacral architecture. Since 1965 it has been protected as a cultural monument, which shows its historical and architectural value. It is a parish temple of the Roman Catholic Church dedicated to St. Wenceslas, patron of the Czech lands.

The construction took place between 1769 and 1772, which ranks it in the late Baroque period with classical elements. In 1863 the church was restored and acquired a new decoration, especially in the form of paintings which still decorate its interior. These dates show how the temple gradually changed in line with the former aesthetic preferences.

From an architectural point of view, it is a one-boat rectangular church with a square presbytery. Its most visible element is the prism tower located above the western facade. The facade is divided by Pillastra and is surrounded by a rizalite with a rectangular portal, decorated with a laminated ledge in the upper edge. Above the portal is a rectangular window ending with an irregular segment as well as windows on the sides. The tower is reinforced in the corners with additional pilasters and on the top floor it turns into an octagonal with a cupola, which is typically a baroque element.

The interior features rich Baroque decoration. The walls are structured by half-pillars decorated with pilasters with a richly laminated ledge. Both the ship and the presbytery are covered with a flat vault that creates a refined spatial impression.

The church's facilities came from the Baroque and were gradually modified. The main gem is the main altar with the painting of St. Wenceslas and Radslav by Josef Hellich from 1863, which is flanked by the statues of St. Vojtek and St. Prokop. The pulpit is purely baroque and comes from the period of construction. Other attractions are paintings from the second half of the 19th century, marble baptizer and wooden crucifix from 1902. In the immediate vicinity of the church there is an iron cross dating back to 1833, which complements the spiritual atmosphere of this monument.

The parish Church of Saint Václav in Žitovlice is a late Baroque structure. It was built between seventeen sixty-nine and seventeen seventy-two, and underwent renovation in eighteen sixty-three. Since nineteen sixty-five it has been protected as a cultural monument.

The church has a single nave of rectangular shape, followed by a square presbytery. Above the western façade rises a prismatic tower. The façade is divided by pilasters and its central section projects slightly forward. In the middle is a rectangular portal, above whose lintel the cornice breaks. Above the portal is a rectangular window terminated by an irregular arch, and the windows on the sides are likewise terminated. Pilasters reinforce the corners of the tower. In the highest storey the tower transitions into an octagonal shape and bears a domed cupola.

The interior walls are divided by half-pilasters. They are decorated with pilasters and an abundantly broken cornice. Both the nave and presbytery are covered with a barrel vault.

The church furnishings are Baroque and were created at the same time as the building. Later it was adapted by Stoklasa the Younger. On the main altar hangs a painting of Saint Václav with Radslav by the painter Hellich from eighteen sixty-three. On either side of it stand statues of Saint Vojtěch and Saint Prokop. The pulpit is also Baroque and comes from the same period as the altar. The remaining paintings are from the second half of the nineteenth century. The font is marble and the wooden crucifix dates from nineteen hundred and two.

Not far from the church stands an iron cross from eighteen thirty-three.

Tips for visitors

For the best experience we recommend a visit on bright days, when the sunlight will highlight the baroque details of the interior. For photography are the most suitable places near the presbytery where interesting angles of architecture can be captured.

We recommend to find out where the most suitable place to stand the vehicle is in the vicinity before travelling.

When visiting, it is worth taking drinking water and, if necessary, small money. It is good for families with children to prepare short attractions about Baroque architecture to make the tour for the smallest attractive.

After a tour of the church you can take a short walk around and see the historic iron cross from 1833, which complements the atmosphere of the place.

Seasonal recommendations

Nature is awakening around the church and surrounding vegetation begins to bloom, which gives the place a fresh and vital look. The lighting is fine during this period, which allows detailed observation of architecture without excessive glare. We recommend wearing layered clothes because the morning cold can be tight despite a sunny afternoon. Visiting the memory is best during the morning hours when the crowds are the smallest and the air is the purest.

In the summer months, the church is surrounded by rich greenery and the sun rays hit the facade at a sharp angle, highlighting its historical shapes. Due to higher temperatures and high summer season, we recommend you come as early as possible in the morning to avoid the greatest heat and sudden groups of visitors. Remember light, breathable clothes and plenty of fluids for a pleasant experience.

Autumn brings a calm and nostalgic atmosphere to Žitovice, where fog often decreases around the building and leaf colours create golden sets. Light is low and soft in this period, which is ideal for capturing historical details in photographs. It is advisable to prepare warmer layers and comfortable shoes because the moisture in the ground may be higher. The best time to visit is afternoon hours, when the colors most excel.

Zimą works in a very noble and quiet way, especially if the surrounding area is covered with snow or freeze. Short day and colder weather require mainly very warm clothes and quality shoes. In advent time or during freezing days, the attendance is minimal, which guarantees peace, but it is necessary to check shorter opening times.
