Kostel svatého Vavřince (Chlumec) Church

The Church of Saint Lawrence in Chlumeč was an important church monument in the Czech Republic, specifically within the municipality of Chlumec, Ústecký kraj. Founded around 1170, it served as an important parish church for several villages and underwent a major renovation in the early 17th century under Petr Kölbl z Geisingu, acceptance of the Saxon Renaissance style. The company church was at the heart of religious processions until its demolition in 1967 due to planned coal mining.

The origin of the Church of St. Lawrence dates back to around 1170, when Czechs were part of the Holy Roman Empire and experienced significant ecclesiastical development. At first it served as a filial church under the Chabarovice parish, later it became a parish church for the municipalities of the Czech Institute, Hrbovice, Pélice and Sížovice. The original structure was a late Gothic presbytery, which shows its early medieval roots. Over time, the surrounding village of Kolej, associated with Knights Hospital, fell until only the church remained.

At the beginning of the 17th century, when Petr Kölbl z Geisingu initiated renovation between 1616 and 1618, significant transformations took place. These changes introduced elements of Saxon Renaissance style and marked a departure from earlier Gothic features. The reconstruction included preserved presbytery with stellar arched ceiling and flat ceiling. By the end of the 19th century, further modifications were made, including the addition of a new bell tower in 1893. Despite these improvements, the church continued to deteriorate over time.

Owning and managing the church has moved on during its history. Originally part of the property of Knights Hospital later falls within the competence of Petr Kölbl z Geisingu, who was responsible for its significant renovation. The church remained an active location until its possible demolition in 1967 when it was razed along with the neighbouring house and cemetery to make room for planned coal mining.

Key events in the history of the church include its role as a pilgrimage place before the expansion of Lutheranism, especially on August 10, reminiscent of fallen warriors from a close battle during the Hussite wars. The church also housed a Baroque altar with a picture of St. Lawrence and the family coat of arms Kolovrat, which was installed in 1864 after extensive renovations financed from 3000 gold coins. The important bell from 1533, marked "Ujedd," survived the war request and was later moved to the church of St. Wenceslas in Valtířov.

Today, the church of St. Lawrence is no longer accessible as a religious monument, thanks to its demolition in 1967. However, the remains of his history persist through artifacts such as the bell now placed in another church and tombstones of the noble Kölbel family moved to the church of Saint Wenceslas in Valtířov. While the physical structure is lost, its historical significance persists, offering a view of the architectural and cultural transformations that shaped this region.

The reference of the Church of Saint Lawrence as a site of religious importance and architectural evolution underlines its value in Czech history. While it is no longer worth it, his story calls for consideration of the dynamic interplay between faith, art and industry in shaping our heritage.
